We used to only get the Canadian geese for a few months in the winter. Now they live around here all year. They've claimed every holding pond and there are signs all over the roads warning of geese crossings. They're the deer of the feathered world - pests that cause traffic accidents!

ETA - I actually love seeing the deer and the geese - didn't want to leave the impression I dislike them.

And, yes, watching traffic wait as a line of geese waddles across a fairly major road or Boulevard does make me smile a bit... But at least in Fort Collins (and around city park in Denver), they seem to appropriately and fairly patiently, do so.

They were grazing the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street and just as I came around the curve decided the grass was greener on the other side. Cool thing was, as soon as the guy behind me realized why I was stopped, he was OK with it. Most people around here watch out for the geese - I've never seen the carcass of one on the roads, though we see dead possums and raccoons regularly.
