The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo I'm watching this new Sci Fi channel series called Defiance.
They want us to believe that in less than 30 years, seven new alien races have set down roots after a huge invasion that went sour. In this short span of time, A rockies size mountain sprung up around St. Louis, which I gather, will be the central stomping grounds for all these races.
To make it really plausible, as far as anything on SciFy can be plausible, they should have set it about 200 years in the future.
Anyway, it's just a frontier town populated with a bunch of alien races that magically came to earth, decimated the globe and then set up jumbled settlements in burned out cities.
Oh and I forgot to mention all the new kinds of animals that were suppose to pop up in 30-35 years out of god know were.
Sloppy.

(4,541 posts)with their advanced tech, and they brought all kinds of their own native species, and/or genetic material for them, with them. I gathered that they were kinda looking for a new place to settle down.
I'm not saying it was fabulous TV or anything, but they did offer some explanations for what we saw. Hey, it's sci-fi!

(45,558 posts)so aliens sharing the earth, rebuild through terra forma and get it all done in 30 years...
Silver Gaia
(4,541 posts)they want you to watch the show to find out. I think the other alien species already knew one another, though (seems to me they must have arrived together, for whatever reason - maybe their solar system was dying or something), so it was just a matter of destroying our infrastructure, along the rest of the planet as we know it, and then taking over. That's what the conquering force usually does in any case, right? They take over. Obviously there are pockets of resistance, hence "Defiance," but they seem to have conquered Earth with superior tech, and that was probably pretty easy for them. Except for the defiant ones, of course. But hey, like I said, those are the kind of questions, the how, the why, etc. that the showrunners hope will make people come back next week, and the week after that, and the week after that... to find out the answers.
Is it plausible? Probably not. But it doesn't have to be. It just has to make viewers want to know the answers to those questions. It has to make them care what happens to the characters, and hope for them to win. It may or may not succeed as a show, but it has a huge fan-base already through the video game tie-in that already started weeks ago. It's kind of an ingenious idea, because what happens in the show affects the game, and the game can also affect the direction of the show. Gamers out there are loving it, from what I hear, and that's their target audience.

(490 posts)and whenever I see that, for some reason, the word syphilis comes to mind. I haven't watched the station for a couple of years now but I still haunt the message board on occasion.

(1,054 posts)Christ, they can't even spell Sci-Fi right!!!
Actually, I watched a chunk of it myself--but only a chunk. It had some decent sfx and it seemed better than some of the fare we've come to associate with them, shows such as UFO Repo Crew and Beer-Belly Bigfoot Humpers, and made-for-cable movies with titles like HulkSquid vs Sharktopus 1138 and Beowulf vs the Mutant SpiderDucks and Haunted Outhouse and stuff like that... but it's all pretty crappy when it comes to sci-fi for tv these days. Rockne O'Bannon is FAR from my favorite teleplay writer, and he sure seems to get a lotta work in the industry these last few decades. He wrote for the new Twilight Zone, Amazing Stories, the remade V and the films Alien Nation and Fear.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockne_O%27Bannon
...and I just think a LOT of that was pretty crappy, actually. Some decent actors in this new project, but ya can't fix lousy writing no matter how good an actor you are. It all comes down to the writer.

(8,217 posts)Just because they give some quirky shows like Eureka and Warehouse 13.
I don't know about Defiance. I'll watch it later and see if I will go from there.
I enjoyed Continuum a bit though, and it is set in Canada.
You're probably right in what you're saying. I'll give it a chance.

(8,217 posts)Seriously? WHY?!!!!
Should have at least given it 3-4 seasons like the others.
This makes me so sad.

(45,558 posts)Maybe it was a bit too grounded in reality for ScyFy...

(8,217 posts)Seems like they are gambling on a new off-shoot of the Battlestar Galactica series, which takes up their funds.

However, in regards to dynamics and how the world works, I have to agree with you.

(961 posts)I had to go look it up online to figure out all the aliens. Story goes they are all from the same solar system and when it was about to be destroyed, the worked together to create a fleet of ark ships. The come to Earth and are surprised to find humans here.
They are given space for a couple of colonies, but nowhere near enough space for all the people in deep sleep. Their ambassador to the UN is killed, causing the beginning of the Pale Wars. At some point, the fleet in space is destroyed, no one knows who or how this happens. One of the outcomes is Arkfall, different ships crash to Earth releasing teraforming technology onto the planet in a haphazard way, as well as releasing flora and fauna from their home worlds. These as well as earth flora and fauna are mutated at an increased rate by the teraforming tech. The teraforming tech includes geological teraforming as well as environmental.
Their fuel is actualy the feces of one of the mutated insects.....
