(1,426 posts)USA is the only country to use jury to bring charges...It's a waste of time
I don't have the luxury of being employed who will be forced to pay me.. and now I have to dip into my meagre savings to pay for my mortgage..

(1,188 posts)I think California is this way. After that you have to appear. If you have already been selected it's probably too late. Check the form they sent you and see if it mentions this possibility.

(82,333 posts)Did you hear any evidence?
If you want to get off, repeat that to the empanlling judge.
I'm more suspicious of the police than the suspects when I would get called, which usually got me out of serving.

(82,333 posts)Ask the panel how many would vote guilty right now. Usually no one raises their hands. Then ask how many would vote not guilty right now. Usually no one raises their hands then either. So then ask a juror why not vote not guilty right now. The answer is either, I haven't heard any evidence yet or I want to hear both sides.
That gives you an opportunity to talk about the presumption of innocence. If you have heard no evidence, you must acquit. Then you can go on about this "both sides" notion and talk about the prosecutor's burden and police testimony.
I wish you lived in Pike County, Pennsylvania.

(1,426 posts)It would pay $40 if I were a petit juror instead of a grand juror..

(2,747 posts)I got out of it, thankfully.
Tell them you are incontinent
Honestly, I have no problem with serving, but I simply can't be down that long. I explained this to them and they let me go.

(54,990 posts)explain your hardship and be sure to show extreme bias against defendants any time you are summoned for any kind of jury. Hopefully you will always be dismissed. I wouldn't want that attitude from a juror deciding anything about me.

(4,833 posts)A few years ago I wound up on a jury that was seated for about three days, then went into recess for six months, then resumed for another week. It was a pain in the ass, but ultimately I was proud to participate and fulfill my obligation.

(2,015 posts)and despite grumbling and trying to think of ways to get out of it I showed up when I was supposed to. Luckily for me they had 26 people there and only need 23 so they drew names to see who would be excused with credit for serving and I was the second name drawn. You never know, you might be as lucky.

(10,076 posts)Hi,
I didn't get called for a grand jury one, but I did get called. I was actually looking forward to it and was hoping to get chosen to be on the trial for the jury. It was an interesting civil case. I am fortunate that I got paid for work for civil duty. I would think you could get out of it by being honest, but who knows. One of the members of the jury I was on was saying that serving would cause him hardship, and he still ended up serving. I hope you get out of it if you can, I personally enjoyed mine, but I understand everyone's circumstances are different.
Peace

(3,275 posts)Fortunately, it was only a week. Unfortunately, my job paid by the hour so I lost a week's paycheck. I was paid $17 a day for jury duty. That barely covered the train fare each day to go to jury duty since it was so far away from where I lived. It was an interesting experience but it cost me money I couldn't afford to lose. Fortunately, I had a little bit in savings to get me through that month.

I can't believe the lack of empathy here.

(1,426 posts)I automatically pay 30% in taxes each month ... I have a nanny who expects to be paid on time ... I have autopayment towards my kid's college fund .. I buy my own health care.
even with full 8 hour days - I barely save a dime for myself ( I have been looking for a second job for months now - so that I can have a half decent retirement) ...I havent taken a vacation in couple years because I can't afford it.
I hate DU sometimes - because people get all high and mighty here.

(16,350 posts)We need good smart progressive people represented on juries. I think of Troy Davis and I wish I'd been on that jury. Of course if it's a significant hardship, it's not hard to get out of jury duty, but you have to report per the summons. I seem to get called up every 15 minutes but for various reasons, I haven't been more than an alternate. I really want to be a juror one of these days.

(23,283 posts)Serve on the jury, AND figure out how to charge for the hours?
A LAWYER could do it. Shirley, an IT consultant is as smart as a LAWYER!
Oh, yeah, the reason you go: If you don't get excused, you'll end up with a different kind of summons.
