(1,695 posts)I feel bad for you losing your dog. I dread the day my dogs leave me. I will think of your loss & hug my boys. I hope your pain eases.

(7,889 posts)Your furbaby looks like the brother of my Candy (she was black with big brown eyes). Candy was 3 lbs and once chased a lab down the street after it had the temerity to come into "her" yard. She came back, sat on the porch and looked at me like "Uh huh, I'm bad."

(20,440 posts)7 years ago, I immediately gave away everything to the local aspca: Bowls, kennel, food, leashes, all of it.
The little reminders just hurt too much.
Put his special fav toys in a box somewhere, but do yourself a favor and put it all out of sight. It just makes you miss them more.
Sometimes I see a dog and want to get back into dog-mommying, but I like my independence.
Don't rush right into the next one: There's always time.
Get something new going in your life as a distraction. Start that new hobby or cause. "Cause there's really nothing for it.

(50,504 posts)I lost her 6 months after both my parents passed away. I could not wait for grieving to go away as I had another that needed company. I have a older one that I got to be company for the younger one. She will be turning 16 next month. When I was gone she would still be standing instead of sleeping and at times yapping when I got back. She has not indicated any ability to hear so I'm sure opening the garage door didn't wake her up and I checked a couple times by looking in the window without opening the garage door. When my first was still alive the older one would many times be sleeping when I got in and at times I thought she wasn't there because she was so still. She spends most of her time sleeping and eating. She is more of the type that is unaware of her surroundings. With her age she has gotten more lost and at times needs to be kicked started out of her moments.
It is good that I got another one. She isn't the same but has some similar qualities. I still miss my girl. Had her buried out by her favorite spot which was by the composter bin. I don't need to see the spot to think about her at times.

(20,440 posts)Dogs really are sweet little beings. They set up their own relationship with us, and no one can ever replace them.
Some day when I'm retired and around the house more I'll get back in.

(30,947 posts)I feel your pain. I have lost 3 dogs within the past 10 years. Your photo looks like he was a Chihuahua, and 17 years was a good long life. I have a Chihuahua and she is 4 years old and will probably outlive me.

(37,648 posts)You must've been doing somethin' right to give the little fella a long life.
It comforted me to think that dogs go where we go, and my Buddy and Puddinhead will be waiting for me. Some think that's silly. But I don't see why not. Stranger things have happened. And it comforted me greatly.
