It's hard to argue that the unsynchronized chromatic orchestral crescendo that appears twice in the song is not cacophonous. But this isn't a bad thing. It's a stroke of genius, I think.

I don't know what 'top' you are referring to. I'm pretty sure ADITL was never released as a single, so it wasn't at the top of any charts I know about. But it is at or near the top of a lot of people's 'best song ever" lists.

melodic at first, then devolves into the combat sequence which is pretty cacophonic and chaotic.

I forget the artist (on edit: Eroc Burden & The Animals) and don't know if it made it to the "top" of the charts, but you hear now and again on the classic rock stations.

on edit: Here it is:

7. We heard it a lot here on KISN (Ninety-one-derful) when it came out, so it made the charts.

Don't know if it made it to the top, but it's one of my favorites.

"21st Century Schizoid Man" by King Crimson.

It was never in the official Top 10 charts but was/is a
favorite on many alternative lists.

Most of the rest of that album sounds like a jazzier and more sophisticated take on stuff like The Moody Blues were doing around the same time.

Then there's this track, that seems to be calculated to be as abrasive as possible with the distorted vocals, and totally insane guitar and sax solos. Cacophonous is certainly a good description, good call.

Who remembers the crazy song that begins with a wail, "WhoaaaaaAHH, WHOAAAha!" And I believe it includes the words jungle and "young boys are,"

That's my contribution to the cacaphonic thread.

Not a top song, but it was entered in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2009.
