I don't eat hot food the way I used to, probably because it's not so readily available. But I used to eat hot food with a friend who could eat stuff I couldn't even contemplate. Trust me, she was in no way manly.

Remember, there are many cultures that eat almost exclusively extremely spicy food.
I don't like food so spicy that it is unbearably painful but I do simply enjoy spicy food. I really could not say why but it certainly isn't a macho trip.

OMG!!! I turned beet-red and every orifice in my body was streaming. It was so embarrassing that
I just paid my tab after a few bites and fled the premises.

(12,132 posts)and one time a co-worker went with us who hadn't gone before. He got the red curry and asked for it Thai hot (as opposed to american hot or the plain old medium that I order). The waitress said "You sure? It's reeeeeally hot"....He says "My wife is from Korea - she makes us hot stuff all the time. I can take it."
He couldn't take it. A couple bites in and he excused himself to the restroom. I believe he went in to cry. I'm sure he ran cold water over his face and head.
That was like 4 years ago and we still laugh at him for that. It's cool though - he laughs too..
In the intervening time he's brought food in that his wife has made for us and she is a great cook and some of it is way hotter than I can take and he eats it right up so I don't even wanna know what made his forehead explode.

It wasn't the exploding forehead that you had to worry about.
