Just curious. I do my best to "not get my feelings hurt" but yes, it does happen.

(28,749 posts)I am gay (came out in 7th grade), overweight, and work retail. It takes a lot at this point in my life to ruffle my feathers. That being said... people can be very hurtful and mean, I see it EVERYDAY. It is not right, it's not fair, it should not happen... but it seems like it does happen quite often in life.
I think also being self confident is helpful?
What really scares me about people getting their feelings "hurt" is the rash of bullying, and youth suicides that are occurring due to "shaming" and bullying at school and online.

(10,237 posts)I'm overly sensitive and kind of sensitive about being sensitive and I bet most guys are but try to act like they are insensitive.

(23,973 posts)But then again, I was once told that I "had the heart of a little black spider" by a sales rep (of all people!) because I wouldn't purchase her crappy product that wasn't selling and wasted space on my shelves.
The people in my departmant that ovewrheard her laughed their asses off, because they knew I was hard-nosed when it came to my job.

(66,294 posts)I grew up getting bullied and called lots of names. It hurt, and made school a living hell for a while. When I hit puberty, I filled out fairly nicely (I inherited my Dad's chest and shoulders; he was a powerfully-built guy), and people stopped messing with me. I looked like I could give them a hard time if I wanted to. Which shows you what cowards bullies truly are.
Anyway, my coping mechanism at the time was to say to myself: "If they really knew me, they wouldn't have said that."
It applies just as well today. I tend to ignore people who are trying to hurt my feelings. They're not important enough to bother with.

(12,132 posts)but every once in a while my wife can hit me where it counts. Often, it hurts so much that I have to withdraw and ponder my recent actions and there's a better than 50/50 chance I was behaving poorly to start and she was reacting to that.
there is a lot of truth in the saying that only the ones you really love can hurt you. And vice versa.
Making up is fun though.

(9,527 posts)I have a remarkable ability to have people think it's okay to treat me like I'm garbage. It's pretty much the worst superpower ever.
Part of it is that I have a reputation as always being willing to be the one to sacrifice so everyone assumes I'll always sacrifice, and part of it is that nobody roots for Goliath (I'm physically bigger than a lot of people I'm around in the sports I do).
But some of it is that I never really learned to trust or that somebody actually believed in me and I have a memory like an elephant. So I tend to take things as further slights than individually they would be and I remember a lot of the other ones that most people would forget.
