The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI now have a wheelchair, walker and crutches.
But I like my walker best. New and improved duct taped pool noodle handles. The pipe insulator wasn't lasting long enough. My mom made the bag.
My hip is getting better... from being hit by a mini van. Still 4-6 weeks until I can put weight on my right foot due to the two hairlines fractures. Argh.
Tired out...went to vote today and bought my crutches and the possibly stupid decision to go to bed bath & beyond. Whose stupid idea was it to put hard plastic handles down on walkers anyways? No gel or something? My hands got horribly red today...

You will be quite tired for awhile. I still am from time to time after my shoulder surgery, and that's been almost 3 months. Of course, I'm older, and everybody's different. Just take it slowly and you'll get there.

(3,502 posts)from last year, when I broke both my feet at once. Still not quite perfect. I agree. Once I could use the walker I liked that best. I'm keeping them all because we seem to be getting a little accident prone and stuff as we get older. Also, I have a walker with wheels and a seat and storage and it's better than those roll-up chairs for taking to outdoor events.

(10,039 posts)But finding one for my height might be difficult. And I'm not disabled forever. Though I'm anxiously waiting for my temporary handicap placard at the moment.
union_maid
(3,502 posts)But my husband has terrible neuropathy and I seem to be doing a serial disability thing. So, I invested a little. The wheelchair was a gift, so it evened out. My sister and I at a drugstore and she was struggling with the rental wheelchair and a woman came up to us and asked if we wanted one. We asked if she was selling or something like that and she said, no, she just needed to get rid of it. It had been her late husband's and she lived in a condo and had no place for it, so we followed her home and she gave it to us.
Neoma
(10,039 posts)Our wheelchair is rented. We had to switch out for a new one because the other one reeked of cigarette smoke. My mom tried to pine-sol it and then it reeked of cigarette smoke and pine-sol...
Glad to hear you're mobile!

(28,394 posts)I am in the same boat! I left the wheelchair behind, but I'm still on the walker. The PT is supposed to start me on a cane today.
Those pool noodles are a great idea. My hands were raw when I started using the walker. The PT showed me how to maneuver to put less weight on them and they improved.
Before long you will have upper arms as toned as Michelle Obama's. LOL
Best DU vibes for a speedy recovery, Neoma.

It'll be awhile till the cane...

(10,039 posts)Absolutely all my weight on one leg and the other for balance. Which I really only do with the walker in front of me. I don't trust my crutches since I need more balancing support at times.

Most of them have adjustable wheels AND handles to accommodate MOST heights -- and the old-style
walker tired me out just from having to deal with ITS shortcomings.
.
Google "4-wheeled walker". The pictured one was JUST over $100 and made a HUGE difference in my
mobility and motivation to go for a walk somewhere. Well worth the price.
.
It's worth it for the seat alone -- I can rest and then carry on.
.
.
The handles aren't gel on mine -- but they're not hard plastic, either. And the chair design lessens the
work your hands do by over 90%, I'll bet.
.
.
Do NOT deal with a company called HPFY -- I got nothing but grief from them.

... as that old-style walker will have more negative effects on your healing up than
positive ones. MAYBE (just maybe) they're OK for getting from the bedroom to the
bathroom to the kitchen to the couch and back -- but definitely not for anything
further.
.
I think if one of the old walkers can be adjusted to fit you comfortably, one of the
new ones would work also (be sure to get one with adjustable wheels AND handles.
.
I took the old-style the first time I needed a walker because it was just going to
be temporary. It was -- but the old walker probably slowed my progress -- so even
for that short time (less than a month), a new one would have been beneficial to
my health and, more importantly, my energy/motivation levels..

I broke a foot while I was recovering from back surgery. It was just awful.
I had all three contraptions: Walker, crutches, wheelchair.
That was 10 years ago. I still have the walker. It gets a lot of practical use, like for some of my exercises etc.

Moroccan Argan Oil Lotion is my favorite. It has rice milk and bamboo extract to make skin supple. Smells wonder, light floral scent.
