The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsYou guys have such interesting lives -
I went to bed early last night because I was just worn out. Got up this morning, read the paper, went outside and put a couple of splashblocks under some downspouts (new house). Took out a fire ant nest.
Came back inside, and read about last night's barroom brawls, toxic ex-boyfriends coming back from the dead, and all manner of excitement.
Obviously I need to get out more.

anyone here were gracious enough to let me know whether I should have my glasses on or off before I pitch a fit and and fight off that hypothetical barroom assailant.

Anything we can do for you?

(14,881 posts)from former boyfriends who turn up 40 years later, along with various and sundry stalkers, tool thieves, and criminal neighbors of all sorts. Plus mountain lions, a neighbor's pet african lion, a neighbor's bull, wolves, coyotes, coy-dogs, fischer cats, and moose.
It doesn't pay much, but it is a pretty exciting job. You never know what loser will wend his way to the doorstep next...

(21,020 posts)Two days ago I got together some stuff for my composter bin.
Headed out to the back and dumped the garbage, then gave the bin a couple of spins. Like a big BINGO spinner thing.
Opened the top and smelled compost to make sure the proportion of "green" to "brown" is pretty even...no rotting garbage scent...all is right in the compost world.
The thrill was almost too much to deal with.

(14,881 posts)Do you ever put your gardens to bed down there? Or do they just keep going year round?
Here in Maine, they hibernate for about 11 months of the year. Then we plant and weed and swat mayflies and mosquitos like crazy. We hover over the single tomato the survives the late frost, praying to the sun gods to keep winter at bay long enough for it to ripen, then give up and have a fresh fried green tomato before the snow flies.
Moondog
(4,833 posts)So year round for most people.
Grew chile peppers in Earth Boxes last year. Still have a bunch in the freezer though.

(14,881 posts)Here we just side dress with fresh manure in the fall. By spring we have little turd-shaped compost balls to work into the soil.
I've been thinking of selling them to tourists and snow birds by the dozen in egg crates for potted plants. One turd per pot should do I would think. My mare needs to start earning her keep somehow, and producing turds seems to be her 2nd greatest skill, beyond bronco busting. I think there's a bigger market for compost than broken bones. Although I could be mistaken there. Maybe she could do a little collections work on the side.
Moondog
(4,833 posts)Not the same, somehow.
But I do think you have a great idea for generating another, uh, earnings stream.

(21,020 posts)of good compost!
