I was a young lad living in Savannah, Georgia in the late 60s and when it came out, this bizarre tune would play on the local AM radio station every few minutes. It was by the Florida garage band The Nightcrawlers and became a national hit (and has since been covered by a lot of other bands, including The Cars). I don't think the Nightcrawlers ever had another hit record. The tune was so simple, that any high school kid who had never touched a guitar in their life could learn to play it in a couple of days. The lyrics about a guy finding a black egg in a tree which became his prized possession and about which he's paranoid of having it stolen sounds like the songwriter must have been very, very high when he wrote it.
I don't care what they say,
I'm gonna keep it anyway.
I won't let them stretch their necks,
To see my little black egg with the little white specks.
I found it in a tree just the other day,
Now it's mine all mine, they can't take it away.
There comes Mary, there comes Lee :
I'll bet what they want to see.
I won't let them stretch their necks
To see my little black egg with the little white specks.
I found it in a tree just the other day,
Now it's mine all mine, they can't take it away.
Oh my, what can I do ? Little black egg's gonna tell on you.
I won't let them stretch their necks
To see my little black egg with the little white specks

I guess I figured it was some kind of code or something.
