They squint their eyes and "smile" as the babies "make muffins" on their bellies ... so proud ...

They are so smart, those Abyssinians. I love "talky" kitties, and most of them are like that.

I have a thing for talky kitties. My late Tabby (not an Aby, just a mutt kitty) was very vocal. I miss his serenades.

When I was about 9, our cat Precious had her first kitten on my stomach while I was sleeping. I woke up, I think, immediately after this happened, and took her to the box we had prepared for her to give birth. She had three more while I watched.

I think cats do this when they really trust their humans.

Our cat was nestled up against my daughter on the couch when kittens started emerging. I think my daughter was home sick from school that day. I was sitting on the loveseat and could see this happening. This was a long time ago. Now we would not be so negligent as to let a get knocked up, but this was in the seventies when things were kind of wild all over.

The mom cat was tiny - only weighed about 6 pounds ever - and we didn't think she was old enough to spay. Our vet didn't think she was old enough to spay, she was so small.

About four months after she showed up, she crawled into my lap and was acting odd. Suddenly my lap was damp and there was this kitten. There was only the one kitten, a little calico.

Mom cat was spayed as soon as possible and the kitten was spayed as soon as she was old enough. Mom cat died of a heart defect at six year of age. The calico lived with me all her life, until she was seventeen.

I'd had a Siamese that was an accomplished climber and named him Tenzing Norgay. Years later I had Hillary, who was not a climber, then my husband adopted another non-climber we named Edmund. My current kitty is Tashi Norgay, named for Tenzing Norgay's grandson. He's not much of a climber, either. He recently fell off the roof, fortunately the only injury was to his pride.
