Dunning-Kruger effect:
Stupid people think they're smart, ugly people think they're hot, and yes, bad people really do think they're good. The flip side is if you're above average in a given area you tend to underestimate your skill or talent - so if you find yourself questioning how good a person you are, you're probably doing pretty well.
Dunning and Kruger proposed that, for a given skill, incompetent people will:
tend to overestimate their own level of skill;
fail to recognize genuine skill in others;
fail to recognize the extremity of their inadequacy;
recognize and acknowledge their own previous lack of skill, if they are exposed to training for that skill.
