I haven't watched an ongoing drama series in twenty years but had to watch this because I am a big fan of the good Doctor. I am more of a Mythbusters/cooking shows/animation and sci-fi guy. I am even really liking the new Doctor Who after being largely indifferent to the series before now.
Holy shit! Is this what today's better dramas look like? Subtly written, with many low level shout-outs and references to the Harris books. Incredibly acted. Hugh Dancy is amazing. Best Asperger's character ever in TV/film (I am dx'd multiple times by MDs and PHds) and Mads Mikkelson's icy, intellectually detached performance was every bit as valid as Sir Anthony's more theatrical interpretation.
According to Word of God Lecter was from the Eastern Baltic, and Mikkelson's indeterminate Eastern European accent and coldly reptilian demeanor were actually more true to the books than Hopkins. Laurence Fishburne is one of those few actors, like Patrick Stewart, that brings megatons of sheer gravitas to any role he essays. This is great stuff and reminded me more than a little of David Lynch in its framing and perspective shifts.
The time-shift to the present was a little odd, but it really had to be there to work.
I will definitely be back for more appointments.

(1 post)only problem I have with this show is I can't understand what Mikkelsen is saying. Don't get me wrong - the accent is cool, and anyone named 'Hannibal' should have one. But I seriously got about 80% of what he said.
