Just imagine that you can only select hard coded cold states to live in
which one will you select and why?
(I thought of putting a list of cold states here to choose from, then decided not to. I leave it to you to decide which states you consider cold states.)
For myself, I would say VT or MA. They are both so blue! NH would be all right too.

(12,296 posts)I like the thought of being close to the coast, being able to be snowed in for a week at a time, and having lots of nature around when the snow isn't so deep.
Oh and the generally liberal politics help, too.
Montana/the Dakotas feel too 'cowboy ish' for me, and I grew up in WI and have friends/family in MN & don't really consider them 'hard coded cold' because they do actually have all 4 seasons.

(50,566 posts)I can't handle the mountain states in winter (that elevation kills me with the dehydration, etc.). I can't handle the extreme wind and extreme chill factor of the plains states in winter. I'm definitely a coastal person (I think Vermont would be close enough to the ocean for me).

(32,078 posts)If one could consider Washington or Oregon to be "cold" states, which I do, they'd be tops. But, I think they'd generally be considered more moderate.

(4,833 posts)I live in FL. To me, MA is cold. And I have lived in the Lexington / Concord area for about 18 months. It's damned cold. But nice. And I prefer the North Shore from, oh, Salem up through and north of Marblehead.

(135,425 posts)I am in NYC this week, and it's....brisk! I just came from CA (south of LA) and everyone was complaining that it was "cool"--I spent a lot of time in the pool.
Head down towards the Cape--it's usually warmer in that end of MA. Even the south shore is milder, usually, than the north shore. In the eastern half of MA, Worcester and the Merrimack Valley get the worst winter weather.
Boston is the windiest city in the US...windier than Chicago!

(4,833 posts)The FL summer just lasts longer.
I have spent time on the Cape. In summer and in winter. Weirdly, I actually prefer the winter. Because I prefer my beaches to be deserted.
What I miss, in FL, is spring and fall. And there is no fall like a New England fall.
So I am toying with getting a smallish condo / pied-à-terre up there, that I can lock and leave when the cold ceases to be amusing.

(135,425 posts)Christmas too, often as not. I have a ton of family who are year-rounders there. Easier to go to them now than they come to us, which used to be the norm.
I like to go to northern Maine in the heat of summer sometimes...also the dead of winter when there's a ton of snow on the ground--it never seems "as" cold up there for some reason. I guess it's because the air is less humid..!

(54,338 posts)When we take long vacations, we ALWAYS head back to the States and Massachusetts.
Like that old Standells song, we love Boston, and we go search out a sparsely populated part of the Outer Cape for the rest of the time. The living is not cheap in Bosstown, but there are a LOT of very pleasant people in that part of the world, and we feel right at home there.

(4,033 posts)Both have a coastline (very important). I could live in a quiet town, where I could walk into town and to the library. I would have a wood burning stove for the winter. The summers are hot, but tolerable. They also have 4 seasons.

(3,502 posts)I already have friends in the Berks, so if I didn't have to make a living that would be just fine. My son would love to end up in VT and I'd like to end up somewhat near him, so that would be fine, too.

(23,340 posts)and NYC, if someone else will pay large amounts of money for me to live in the lifestyle I'd like to become accustomed to.
My ancestors settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636.
I like New England because of scenery and history, my family on my dad's side was from Maine, I lived in Connecticut and went to college in Rhode Island. I also lived many years in the Midwest, and never wish to go back again.
I could see living in Toronto, too.
Colorado is just beautiful, great skiing, and enough cosmopolitan aspects to make it interesting.

(33,024 posts)When we moved here from Montana in 1967, I was a junior in high school.
My oldest brother was a student at Northwestern University in Illinois.
The family move was a sudden thing. Besides traveling to a state he had never seen,
he had no idea the move was even being discussed.
He came to Arizona for Christmas, by train.
When he arrived in Flag, there was an epic snowstorm.
Everything shut down, I think there was six feet of snow.
He recounts the plastic seats in the station that were designed to prevent comfort.

(1,349 posts)As a cold weather/dark early at night - lover, this winter was pretty good. Last winter sucked. Most people like warm, sunny weather. I hate it. Summers here are BRUTAL. Every day last summer was 85 - 105 (heat index) with high humidity. It blows. I love the winter though. I love it when it gets dark at 5 PM and there's a nip in the air. Cold weather puts me right. If I'm in a store (or wherever) and I'm feeling like shit, stepping outside almost always puts me right but quick.
I'd live anywhere cold and liberal. Madison, WI is nice. Minneapolis was nice. Chicago's nice. I haven't traveled enough to speak on the Eastern states. I imagine I'd love Colorado. I watched the movie "Bag It" the other day. I think most of the filming was done in Telluride, which is where I assume the director/star lives. Holy gorgeous!
