Entirely done by Yalies, recent grads and students.
Nice video from a couple of years back. Allison Williams (class of '10) sings at 6:05. Her dad, Brian Williams, in a cameo at 6:43.

(2,173 posts)And that's saying something! I made Pi Mu Epsilon with a 3.83 in my mathematics classes, 400 level and all. All I got out of it was a pin, a certificate, and something obscure to tack onto my resume, but it's still hard to get into.
She will almost certainly pick something in the math/science/technology area. She's also great with languages (Spanish in particular - fluent), but I think she's leaning toward a technology major of some sort. Things can change though.
My eldest was interested in the same but decided to switch to communications/photography/journalism. It's just her passion. She's been to Europe twice and loves the traveling life. Who knows, maybe she'll work for National Geographic one day.
My middle one wants to be a pastry chef, despite her proficiency in foreign languages (including Latin). Go figure. She bakes all the time and comes up with her own recipes from scratch. I don't use cookbooks EXCEPT for baked goods (they're more science than art). I can whip together dinner with whatever is on hand, but I'll be damned if I'm going to try baking that way!!!!
The kids (adults now) have to do what they want with their own lives and I'm not going to push them away from what they want to do in any way. I got shoved around a lot and I regret going with the path I was pushed into. I'd rather have been a photographer, musician, and painter. I'm good at all three. Yeah, I'm one of the best and I can still program circles around most people but it gets boring over time. You can never get bored in the arts.

(63,769 posts)that is going to "fit," career-wise! With all the talk about college majors that go nowhere, career-wise, it is interesting to learn what people in their late teens/twenties are actually considering. My oldest granddaughter's two passions are Marine Biology and Photography and I can see that fitting together. I compare the way this is working out to what museum curators do: figure out imaginative ways to present art or science. Being a curator of your own career is a great thing, IMO!

(2,173 posts)I'm actually shocked that she didn't go for marine biology after high school. She's burnt out and has no interest in college. That's fine with me. I took 4 years off between high school and college. I needed the time. Besides, I would have flunked out in my first year. I needed to mature.
But whatever the "thing" to major in might be in any given year, it's probably a bad idea because everyone else will be majoring in that. Be different.

(63,769 posts)as it did with my granddaughter, sometimes it occurs a bit later. My daughter thinks she should either get a general Liberal Arts degree and go to grad school for the Marine
Biology, or to start out in Environmental Science to get a feel for the broader picture. I see my granddaughter's dedication as telling. It's not just a passing thing with her. And she's had to deal with some rough times with her ADD and her food issues. My heart goes out to her...

(63,769 posts)she has just had to go through a lot of pain due to a tonsilectomy, but she had terrible tonsils and was getting infections in them repeatedly. Teamed up with her food issues and a real problem at her school's dining hall, she lost a lot of weight. Also, her school load is extremely stressful. But she is getting help from her physician, an eating disorder specialist and a psychologist. Thankfully, my daughter and her husband are financially able to take good care of her needs...

(2,173 posts)I lost 1/3 of my weight over the course of two years. It took some work, but I got there. I'm back in the jeans I wore in high school over 30 years ago. At least she's got a support network. Just keep her confidence up.

(63,769 posts)was happy and was eating very well and playing with her 8 year old cousin, who absolutely adores her. One of the reasons she wants to go to college in L.A. is that she CAN be near to some family, while also stretching her wings. And with her interest in photography, she'll be in a good place to blossom...that makes me happy for her...

(42,210 posts)Learned a lot with the first one, who graduated from college in 2010. Younger son is into music so we're researching schools with good music programs. He's also interested in chemistry so might want a double major - go figure.
We're doing a New England swing this summer. I'll see if we can include Yale.
Thanks,
