First child changes the family quite a bit. Especially a daughter.
Prepare to feel over-protective at all times.

I'm an Uncle, and I am already over-protective on my niece.

Well, I have Cigars I got from the Dominican Republic a few years back...
I bought it out of a whim, and don't plan to use them. You're free to one or two of them.

Take a nap then make sure you have supplies at home: Diapers, rash cream, some container for the toxic waste, and don't let the hospital keep the oversized receiving blankets. Take everything the nurses give you. Like that plastic hair brush, its awesome for years.

Enjoy!!!

Oh, and nows the time to open the 529 college savings plan. A great place to put gift cash from grandparents and others... Putting in $25/mo or so will make a difference in he long run.

Hopefully those will be tempered with plenty of this:

There will be milestones and firsts along the way, like: to name a few. Just remember when things get really you may feel like or even .

Better yet, buy 3.
Unless you're going the 'green' route of cotton diapers.
When our daughter was born in 1971 disposable diapers were relatively new and expensive.

'We' ( Miz t.) cleaned (a very smelly job) and washed cotton diapers (be CAREFUL with the safety pins!), but those diapers made great dish towels and polishing rags for years afterwords. I missed them when they finally wore out.
I think our daughter was in high school by then.

I didn't have a shotgun, but I used to mess around with a bullwhip.
Got to be pretty good with it.
I kept it coiled and hanging from a hook on the mantle over the fireplace.
Just thought it was kind of a funny, quirky thing to have there.
I was "Indiana Jones" before his time.

Years later my daughter told me it really intimidated guys she brought over.
"The word went around that Mr. t. could LITERALLY whip your ass with that thing."

Love the name 'Lola'.
Whatever Lola want, Lola gets.
You'll see.

Congratulations.

Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets
And little man, little Lola wants you
Make up your mind to have no regrets
Recline yourself, resign yourself, you're through
I always get what I aim for
And your heart'n soul is what I came for

Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets,
Take off your coat
Don't you know you can't win?
You're no exception to the rule,
I'm irresistible, you fool, give in!...Give in!...Give in!

One thing I did, - a few days later, of course ........ I planted a tree and named it after my little Karley. He loved that tree! What an exciting time for you all, I know you'll enjoy every second of it.

And please do me a favor and buy the book "Cinderella Ate My Daughter" by Peggy Orenstein. It's about the "princess-if-ication" of our girls.

Two pieces of free advice as the mother of a now grown daughter:

1. If Mom can breastfeed at all, please do so. As long as possible. I breastfed my child until she weaned herself at two and a half. She got solid food as well, at the appropriate age. My husband, my mother and my mother in law all gave me holy hell for it. I asked them, "Have YOU ever nursed a baby? No? Well then shut up!"

So they shut up. My daughter is much healthier than I am. I was raised on soymilk formula in the 1950s and have a terrible immune system. And if Mom has to go back to work, baby can get formula at the babysitter's, if it's not convenient for mom to pump and refrigerate.

2. Have the baby sleep with you for several months. When I had my baby, she slept with me and her father. She was warm, she was secure. When she woke up hungry, I just put her at the breast, and we both went back to sleep. Problem solved. Nobody had to get up and fix a bottle and lose any sleep.

Now if either one of you is a large person, and are afraid of rolling over on the baby, then get a bed you can put right next to yours. Don't let the kid sleep alone and cry all night. That is not natural and not good for momma, daddy or baby.

I'm a nut about breastfeeding and sleeping with your baby. It worked for me. YMMV.

Again, congratulations on the arrival of the new love of your life!

And please tell Momma, often, how proud of her you are for going through the ordeal of birth and getting through it ok, mentally and physically. That's important for you to do. It really is a great accomplishment to have a healthy mom and healthy baby. That's why we have medical science to help us.

Me! Oooh, ooh, oooh, I know a Lola!

The only Lola I know is frigging A.W.E.S.O.M.E!!!!!!!!!

Who is it? Lola Van Wagenen is the founding director of Clio Visualizing History. Dr. Van Wagenen has an amazing history herself.

I knew her in a previous life for both of us when we lived in NYC. I knew her when she was Lola Redford. Yep, Robert Redford's wife of almost 30 years when they got divorced. She was amazing then, too. (I was a teenager....they were my parents' friends. Spent time with them in Utah, a few dinners & I babysat for their kids a couple of times.)

Excellent name association for me!

Congratulations, Will & all of the Pitts! Wonderful, wonderful times ahead!

127. my first bit of advice is to quit drinking (that is--if you drink)
Tue Apr 2, 2013, 02:18 AM
Apr 2013

life gets very hard, and sad, for kids that have to grow up in a household where one or both parents have a drinking problem

pay attention to all the little details, savor them, each stage and phase goes by quickly

write letters to her that she can read when she grows up (with descriptions of adorable, weird, funny, puzzling things she did and what mom & dad did, thought, felt, etc.) document the little details of her life and your new life with her

welcome to babyland! throw yourself into it full force, let yourself be wowed and amazed at how perfectly amazing your baby is. two years from now babyland will be gone--it turns into the hood (toddler-hood) so enjoy it while you can.

toddler-hood is great too. you get to see the world in a different perspective, through the eyes of a child, and that's really cool.

and then kid-dom after that. it's all good. every year, every stage, every month, and day. take a deep breath and dive in--i'm sure you'll appreciate it all.

congratulations--wishing all of you a most lovely life together.

#1: Treat that lady like a Queen!

#2: If there is not a rocking chair by the bed, tell the staff to get one, pronto.

#3: After Mama has fed her, swaddle baby Lola Jane up nice and snuggly, and gently take her into your arms. Rock her slowly and sing softly to her. Any songs you know. Doesn't have to be lullabies. My hubby sang "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" and "If your Chewing Gum Looses It's Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight."

#4: Get some sleep whenever you can!

#5: Hand out more cigars? (Do they do that anymore?)

#6: Drink it all in!

Hugs to all!

Tue Apr 2, 2013, 12:08 PM

She was an early morning baby. While the midwife and her assistant cleaned up, I hung a pink towel from the front window. That spared us a lot of phone calls. When they were done, my wife and newborn daughter were completely passed out. I went out into the world to brag about being a dad!!!!!

One of my stops was our "health food store", a tiny place called Earthward, not affiliated with anything else. I forget what I bought, but I wrote a check for $17.20 - pay to the order of $17.20. The bank cashed it anyway. I still have the cancelled check. My brain was on overload or something.

I was a little more reserved when the other two came along. All three were born in the same room of the same house with the same midwife. And that pink towel got three trips to the window. The blue one must have been sad.

Apr 2013

Happy, Happy Parenthood to you and your wife!!

You asked - what should I do? There is so much any parent here could say in response to that question. But I'll address life-long health issues - specifically - avoiding chronic disease by keeping your blood serum vitamin D3 levels at appropriate levels. According to the VD Council - this is between 50-80 ng/ml unless you have a VD sensitive chronic health complaint - then the levels are higher, between 90-100 ng/ml. Toxicity has literally never occurred below 200 ng/ml.

The Vitamin D council is a great place to get a wealth of remarkable information - but immediately - for mom AND baby's sakes - read this page:

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/news-archive/2009/pregnancy-and-gestational-vitamin-d-deficiency/

Specifically for the mom I would like to note the following - my endocrinologist tells me that hypothyroidism is at epidemic levels in the US. This is an autoimmune condition that hits women especially - and onset is during the child bearing years. This is due to the unusual load the mother bears to supply enough VD3 to both herself AND her baby. Critical stuff.

Then for all of you - this page addresses chronic illness that results from Vitamin D3 deficiency. Experts - scientists and doctors - know that the incidence of chronic disease increases as we move away from the equator.

We have been so stupid - how could they overlook the fact that EVERY living thing needs the sun?

http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/health-conditions/

You have such a wonderful journey ahead of you - enjoy every minute of it.

As a nursing mother - I remember that the first months were very tough. I thought the schedule was going to kill me. But after three months - I was suddenly balanced and doing much better. This happened for all three of my children, which were all nursed for a year. So if your wife is anything like me - it gets much easier after the first three months.
