Prepaid and I'm going ro go with "pay-as-you-go" -- instead of their lowest "monthly
plan", which is still $30/mo, I'm going to purchase 1000 minutes for $100 -- and they're
good for a year (it's a plain talk/text phone -- no Intertubes connectivity).

It'll come in sometime this week. I'll try to remember to report in and let you all know
whether I'm ultimately happy with my choice or not.

(58,636 posts)Peggy is right. At our age (well, my age, anyway), having a cell phone is nearly essential as an important lifeline in emergencies. Given your recent medical trials, I'd say this is a great move for you.

They ARE pretty customer-conscious, even without a buncha purchases.

I think the philosophy now is there are no new customers for new service
(except for ME), so customer retention (and seduction away from other
carriers) is key.

(11,785 posts)I don't use my cell that often, but it's nice to have. And once you're at the Gold level (that's the level you get with the $100 bucket of minutes), if you're nowhere near using your 1000 minutes at the end of a year, you can add a much smaller amount of minutes -- say $15 or $30 worth -- and all your minutes will roll over for another entire year.

(6,261 posts)Our bills were getting close to $100 a month, and we had one scary $530 monthly bill when we were in Europe.
Prepaid is the way to go anyway. After 2 months I still have a nearly $90 balance on it.
10 cents per minute, and 10 cents per SMS is pretty reasonable, really. Shame about losing the unlimited dataplan, but I wasn't using it much anyway.

A nice smart phone, no contract.
T-mobile and I have parted ways.
It was not pretty.
Good you don't have a contract with them.
