There's no place like home

So this 4" long and 1 1/2" wide clump of something appeared without warning at the perimeter of a window. At first, like, huh?!1 Eventually there were comings and goings of a strange (to me) kind of wasp, extra long and thin, and not multiple critters, not much activity. This is near the front door, maximum exposure to human variety of critters, so eviction was needed and happened (details omitted). When the coast was clear of critters, the (nest?) came into view from behind the screen and it was shinier than it looks in this pic, almost looking like plastic. Multiple entry/exit holes. Scraping and then hosing down, it turned out to be quite crumbly, *mud*. Maybe it was a single resident home?
