She is open again starting this week. My hair looks like crap but I don't care at the moment. Some of you may remember that I am the grim reaper of hairdressers. I've never been able to see the same person for very long before they quit or get fired or move. Current one has lasted the longest and I'm thrilled that she contacted me, the bad luck omen. She has been in business a long time and I have no doubt she will stay in business even during the pandemic.
I told her I was going to wait at least a month and she was very nice about it. With Georgia fudging the covid numbers and then opening up a lot of stuff this week, I feel I must wait to see what happens.
If you get your hair cut outside the home, when do you think you would feel safe again?

(14,491 posts)I've had 3 shut down completely on me. One of them an Aveda salon.

(16,330 posts)but I did get butchered by a student there and then they closed on their own.

(14,491 posts)By April, they completely shut down. I decided to bite the bullet and pay their price because I was tired of salons closing, chasing hairdressers around town or hairdressers up and leaving salons. What do I get, the same shit.
After I shut down that Aveda, I just went to another. Loved the stylist. 3 months later she moved to another Aveda.
1st Aveda 15 min drive
2nd Aveda 30 minute drive
3rd Aveda 40 minute drive.
I've decided I'm not going back for a while, if I go back at all.
So if any of you want to see a hair salon close down, send me & Phentex there.

(16,330 posts)no one will tell me where they go now. Even people who had been their stylist for more than a decade! Different reasons, many locations. Yet, I know people who have seen the same person for many years! I won't go to them.
My hair is pretty simple but it has a few idiosyncrasies that make seeing the same person nice.
I am cautious of this one because she moved after I started seeing her and she hasn't enjoyed the commute to work. And she opened a salon further away which she may end up being in full time.

(17,570 posts)...graying foil by bleaching my hair all the way out and dying it PINK! I'm 69 1/2 so i don't care! I will pull my pink hair back and wear it in a pony tail when it gets long enuff. Or braid it! Hubby is growing out his pony tail too.
After Great Clips had their mess, I don't trust salons to be exceptionally cautious....
Phentex
(16,330 posts)either a clip or pony tail. So yeah, not much point in a cut now.

(34,170 posts)I'm taking my direction from her. It sounds to me like you're exercising sensible caution. BTW, my hair is a disaster, too, lol, but my life is more important as is yours. I'll monitor local conditions and make decisions based on that. I know my state will tell me the truth, that isn't true for all states.

(16,330 posts)and no way I'd trust anything our governor says.
Her text just got me wondering.

(7,566 posts)She quickly assured me with all her precautions, which I had been mulling over in my head to ask for, in case I went back. She already has her own room, with a closed door, own outside entrance; clients would have to wash hair at home in order to not have to use the group sinks; she would wear a mask, and require me also to; she would wipe down all surfaces in-between clients, also the capes, etc.. Only one person at a time in her space. She said these are the state beautician rules for certification now. So... I made an appointment two weeks away; My hair is four weeks past a cut and is really ridiculous! (This is Texas) I don't know of any other hair-dressers who have their own room, so I think that would make me likely to not risk it anywhere else.
Phentex
(16,330 posts)There are only three chairs and they are easily 10 feet away from each other. Two are opposite ends of the room. But her A/C is crap (or else she doesn't run the fan) and if someone is having color done, you want to die. She will use a floor fan and sometimes open the door but it's too hot for that now. It's not so much the surfaces I worry about, it's the air. I worry for her safety being so close to people, too.

(1,991 posts)Now that everything is reopening and the Free-Dumbs are going wild, I dont trust even salons/barbers that I know and normally would trust. It8s not their fault that idiots are acting out. But Ill wait until the next wave hits and possibly subsides, in hope that the 2nd time people will show a bit more caution.

(16,330 posts)I have a dentist appointment in July and I still don't know about that either. No doubt the place is sterile but they do breathe on you and you them during a cleaning. I love to have my teeth cleaned! But I'd rather be safe.
SoCalNative
(4,613 posts)I can deal at the moment and can resort to buying clippers if need be. What I really want is for my dentist to reopen so that I can get my teeth cleaned after a 2 month delay.

(31,319 posts)with my stylist. Last time in the salon was the end of February for me.
Where I go there are only 2 stylists working mid day. They will be scanning temps when you come in and masks required.
If hospitalizations aren't going down in another 10 days here in NC, I may cancel the appointment. If they are, I will probably go and then figure I can make it another 3 months before going back again.

(7,604 posts)Seems to me unless your hairdresser and his/her clients have all been tested and have not been exposed to the virus since their last test, that it is not worth the risk.
Bad hair is all the rage right now!
Hekate
(90,189 posts)...and ask if they're open (this is SoCal) and if everybody's wearing masks, 'cause I will be. I have to drive out in that direction for a mammogram sometime, so maybe if I combine the appointments into one day... Aagh, I really do not feel comfortable.

(14,483 posts)or even in private rooms. That would decrease the odds of inhaling virus particles considerably. They can buy portable ones pretty cheap or have the filters installed in their HVAC unit.
That would also help with customer assurance although no one can offer any guarantee no one will be infected if a heavy viral load comes around.
I'm fortunate to have a son that cuts mine in my home........

(90,189 posts)By folding them into a narrower band, I can keep the damn hair out of my face. That feels safer than going to Susie in June 2020.
I really like that woman (and her husband, who was my son's elementary school teacher). For whatever reason, it seems my wavy hair is difficult to cut correctly, and until I met Susie nearly 40 years ago, I always ended up with a chunk of hair sticking out above each ear. She has the knack. I moved 40 miles away and I still drive out to have her cut my hair (lots of errands to do and people to see in that town anyway). I always wondered what I'll do if she ever decides to retire, and I think I am getting a taste of that.
