My favorite board game

Puerto Rico

It's so well balanced it's genius. With 4 players, I've won with 29 points and lost with 66.

Can I mention other websites here? If so, there's a very popular one where you can play it and many other great games all day, every day for free... against other players from all around the world.

And I love it, but it's a different experience that can't provide the party atmosphere of a 4 player game.

Well I guess you're right. Chess usually dampens a party atmosphere. Have to switch to poker for that.

because it was the one that made us realize that traditional boardgames like Monopoly and Risk had been so poorly designed that they turned off people from what is really a great get-together opportunity.

Ultimately, though, Settlers has been relegated to the shelf because there are better games out there. In the end, it's too luck-dependent for us... you get some bad dice rolls at the beginning and you can be locked out from any chance at winning. Puerto Rico, for example, is much more decision-based.

Splendor is an excellent game. We play it often. We also like Guillotine for light entertainment.

As a youngster I used to play Mille Bornes with my parents, aunts, and uncles, so it holds a special place in my memory but I can't really say it's one of my favorites now. Our favorite card games are 6Nimmt! and Coloretto... you really should give those a try.

Settlers came out a few years before I closed my game store and as it as popular, sold well for us I have always been fond of it. I currently have a friend who is trying to start a game group at his local church with a recovery group and have been fielding questions from him about what is good and what isn't so your thoughts are appreciated.

Seriously, I'd never heard of it. I looked it up online and it sounds like a fantastic strategy game. What's the optimal number of players, four?

With 4 the results are more varied; with 3 the outcomes are likely to be very close.

I play a TON online, in fact, at boardgamearena.com...
one of the best sites on the whole of the internet.
