(5,477 posts)my freezer would probably be very well-stocked, and I'd be enjoying a nice squirrel and dumplings dinner!
My mid-70's copy of 'The Joy of Cooking' has some good recipes for squirrel, porcupine, raccoon, bear, and other game. If I remember correctly, they stopped printing these recipes and preparation instructions starting with the mid-90's edition. They recommended against red squirrel, but when I hunted them in northern New York in the pine forests they essentially were pre-seasoned and had a distinct rosemary flavor. I used to pop one in the crockpot before I got my uniform on and went to the shop, and dinner would be ready when I got back to the dorm.

(43,064 posts)It's a backup-backup plan for me, but you never know when food supplies become a bit more seriously impaired. One video says it takes 2 squirrels to feed an adult. Hard to believe.
Brunswick Stew was originally squirrel. Why it's associated with Appalachia ... I don't know. Seems to me my mom had a cookbook that listed it as a Nova Scotia recipe, or maybe I'm just confabulating Brunswick with New Brunswick.

It figures this NASA Engineer can't figure out what to do with squirrels. Sort of

(63,893 posts)squirrel in New Haven (where I lived and held classes). I said I knew of no such local ordinance but that she would have more trouble with the law having a gun. It was the first time I knew that in some cultures squirrels were considered vermin or pests needing an exterminator.

(86,378 posts)I have had interesting experiences with squirrels and had a chance to observe the behaviors of a colony for several years. They sure are interesting.

(60,010 posts)We are avid squirrel watches on our deck, and so far seem to have a squirrel and raccoon proof seed feeder.
fascinating lil guys to watch, we have named 4 of the regulars. By putting a trail of seeds on the outside ledge of the picture window, we get incredible close up views of them. Strangely, when the cats hit the (thick) window glass, the squirrels don't even blink, they just keep chomping.
I did not know there were shows like WipeOut/Ninja Warrior. Free on Youtube.
There go my early bedtime plans.....
