Life in Spain's ''slum of shame''

AlJazeeraEnglish·Published on Apr 29, 2013

It has been named the slum of shame. La Canada Real is an illegal settlement outside Madrid which is home to more than 40,000 people, who face an uncertain future. There is no running water or drains, electricity is hijacked, and houses are built amidst the rubble Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from La Canada Real, Spain.

But I could show you places in the United States that look pretty damn similar. Most people just don't want to admit this exists in the first world.

Allowing shanty towns to sprout-up, creating space where homeless people
can take care of one another, makes so much more sense than criminalizing
homeless peeps simply for not being able to afford conventional housing.
