Bill Maher, ‘The NRA Writes Laws That Make It Harder to Pinpoint and Apprehend Terrorists.’

Bill Maher pointed out that the NRA makes it harder to pinpoint and apprehend terrorists by opposing a gun registry and encoding gunpowder.

Brief clip of the beginning of Maher’s remarks at the end of this video... (ABOVE)

During a discussion of the Boston bombings, Bill Maher added, “I would like to note that the NRA writes laws that make it harder to pinpoint and apprehend terrorists. There’s the gun registry which would help. Encoding gunpowder, certainly would have been we something we could have used. Americans, 85 of them, get shot every day. I don’t want to make this about the NRA, or everything about the NRA, but this is the week that we did lose that gun bill, and I think I do the show mostly for people who are not political junkies like us, who want to watch a show at the end of the week and catch up on the news that they were probably too busy to catch up on during the week, and for those people who just hear that 90% of Americans wanted something. They wanted that background checks bill passed, and it couldn’t get through the Senate. I want to answer that question for them. How can something that ninety percent of people wanted, how can democracy work this badly?”

The answers that Maher’s panelists came up with included the NRA’s contributions to senators, the filibuster, and The Blaze’s Amy Holmes arguing that background checks really weren’t that popular.

1. Pretty well debunked...there are safety problems with the 3M plastic taggants

This is covered in a National Academy of Sciences report. http://www.democraticunderground.com/101661115#post4 Nothing else has been developed subsequently.

Maher is an entertainer and looks for whatever will get him better ratings.

3. If you gun lovers did not oppose it, safer taggants would be developed.

Or, heck, just voluntarily do the responsible thing, and quit buying gun powder and push for laws that make it though to get. You guys are so myopic. To keep yourselves in guns and powder, you make it easy for terrorists, Lanzas, Zimmermans, etc.

I have always stated that I did not oppose safe identification taggants. So PPOSTFU.

I see no reason why the development of a safe taggant for commercial explosives and propellants could not be IR&D funded as IIRC the 3M taggant was.

Various propellants are used by reloaders and muzzle loaders. I cannot think of the last time I heard of it being used in a crime but I have not researched it.

Most of my personal positions are not in alignment with the NRAs, starting with support IBC and required training. You are well aware of that.

Personal firearms are historically and philosophically progressive. They give the individual the ability to protect themselves and their loved ones against those who would do them harm. They are an equalizer of power between the weak and the strong. Historical forces of gun control have clear racist and classist roots in the US.

As you know I am not supporting cowboys or other rude toters, but have been focusing on training GLBT and women who are at higher risk and often the least prepared. I have personal/family reasons for doing that. I also think that as we work to address the root causes of violence those same groups will disarm. Firearms ownership is a responsibility and burden and those groups also seem to take it the most seriously IME.

You might also review the writing of Mao on this.

What DU members have said that the NRA and its officers speak for them? They certainly do not speak for me. I disagree with them on many things, and have stated that publicly here. They do not speak for nor represent all gun owners either, except maybe in your mind.

You are again thinking in binary terms, and most people know better than that. There are times when binary thinking is useful, such as are you or are you not allowed to own firearms?

2. Bill is wrong that America was founded on "rugged individualism"...

Just the opposite. It was founded on the idea that we are stronger together than separately.
