(9,976 posts)I suppose the people that hated Thatcher might have seen it that way, but most of the British people didn't. Her popularity was never higher than it was during the Falklands War.
the sinking was perfectly justified since the exclusion zone was primarily for merchant shipping to keep clear. When you are at war there are no arbitrary boundaries (the UK could have declared an exclusion zone around itself in WW2 but that didn`t stop German bombers coming over in the Blitz). The Belgrano was in a group of ships that was forming a pincer movement on the 2 British aircraft carriers. If those carriers had been sunk then game over.
By sinking the Belgrano the Argentine navy retreated back to their bases and stayed there for the rest of the war. this probably saved lots of lives during the conflict.
You can disagree with Margaret Thatcher, but to come to the defence of a military dictatorship against an elected Government is just taking "the enemy of my enemy" thing too far.

(68 posts)She destroyed the lady caller - the Peruvian peace plan did not come into the UK until after the Belgrano was sunk. So no conspiracy.
