(2,818 posts)After all, all politicians lie and so politically expedient lying is to be expected and even forgiven.
However the suppression of information by this administration exceeds even that of B$. Indeed, Obama has prosecuted more whistleblowers than all past administrations combined. Impressive? Worrisome? Is this what we voted for?
See the UK Guardian's article Three key lessons from the Obama administration's drone lies:
The axiom that political officials abuse their power and lie to the public when operating in the dark is proven yet again ...
Whisteblowers are vital for transparency and accountability, which is precisely why the Obama administration is waging a war on them.
Here is yet another example where we obtained proof of the falsity of the government's claims, and possibly illegal actions, for only one reason: a whistleblower leaked top secret documents to a journalist, who then published them. When you combine an impotent Congress, a supine media, and a subservient federal judiciary - the institutions ostensibly designed to check excessive executive branch secrecy - government leakers have really have become the only reliable means for learning about the lies and bad acts of political officials. And that's precisely why the Obama administration is waging an unprecedented war against them. Yesterday on Democracy Now, New York Times national security reporter Mark Mazzetti explained to Amy Goodman how this whistleblower war - by design - is impeding basic investigative journalism:
Repression and corruption are no better coming from the left, than from the right.

Clinton was a much better choice in 2008. Politicians will tell you what you want to hear to get the job.

(6,960 posts)Madame 3rd way, one of the founders of the DLC, a woman well aware of PNAC (from its 1998 letter to Bill) who nonetheless voted for IWR. A woman who couldn't even manage her 2008 campaign and had to stoop to the kitchen sink ("remember what happened to Bobby Kennedy..."
She'd have been as bad if not worse

(37,648 posts)It's easy to say so and so would've done better. There's no way to know.
But she IS more conservative than Obama. So there's no reason to think she would've held out this long. Like any politician, though, she would've, and did, say whatever was necessary to get votes. She came close.

Although, let's face it, nothing will happen. The road we're headed down as a nation is a bleak one, and the little guy, which probably accounts for about 300 million of us, is not factored into the equations.

(5,792 posts)It will make is solvent for 50 years. Have those that make more in retirement than $500,000 per year not recieve Medicare nor a Social Security check. They pay into the system as everyone does but at retirement if they made it big and are over the allowed amount to recieve these benefits then they don't get them nor do they need them. I know it's crazy but hey why not. They pay for the whole and they wouldn't depend on a check and I'm sure they don't even notice that check in their account. Nor would they depend on Medicare as their medical if wealthy enough to pay for their own medical insurance. Just sayin. Why do the rich keep getting their way and not paying their fair share. Who's idea for that cap to begin with. Guess I'll go research.

(12,882 posts)Is he better than McCain or Rmoney? I don't know. At least with those two, you could believe they'd do as they promised. It might not have been good for the nation, but we could at least trust that they'd pursue their promises - if not actually institute them.
Besides this proposed betrayal to seniors and veterans (I fit both descriptions, BTW), he told voters they could "take to the bank", his promise to end this illegal war (the one in Iraq) the DAY he took office. And he COULD HAVE...... but didn't. Then there was the unmistakeable goal of a public option for health care. One that somehow morphed into health insurance subsidizing. The list, sadly, is longer than this.
Like SO many, I had hopes that his second term - and the mandate that came with it - would result in us progressives at least getting SOME kind of concession. Instead, Obama seems hell bent on garnering a request from the Right to join their party. How does that line go??? "What part of NO don't you understand?"
Editing to add this: I'm just an opinionated old grump. I have the "golden years" luxury of sitting here in my comfy kitchen and lobbing stink bombs at this administration. My words and my position in society carry less weight than a piss ant. But here's this vid clip - just posted to DU - of two respected fellas who folks are alot more likely to listen to than anyone would me. And they're making a better case against this president than I am here.

(9,474 posts)and it breaks my heart to have to say that. This country is so broken. Sadly, I think we really beyond fixing. I, too, fit both descriptions, ie, senior and vet. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place!
I continue to sign petitions, vote Dem, etc, but I have pretty much given up hope that anything will really change.

(12,882 posts)And while I had some glimmers of hope with Occupy, the fizzle of that - coupled with the laws created to contain such in the future - really make for a dismal outlook. I really wish I could just lock the doors and go to DC, but I can't. Besides, I'm too old to sleep on a park bench or stand for hours in heat or cold. I now write letters and postcards and mail my disgust off with them. I only wish I could find out how many of the missives I send out are actually SEEN by anyone other than the postman.

(5,792 posts)Told her no CPI. Raise the cap so the rich can pay more and their fair share into SS then there would be no problem with SS. I said tell him to not do this to us out here. Then I quoted the above quote by the President to her.
She said it will go to the White House this afternoon and she seemed to act as if he himself will see these comments. Oh I wish.

(36,392 posts)He has shot an enormous hole in the SS Make The Congress Blue In 14, and I don't think it can be repaired. His budget proposal was a disaster of historic proportion.
It is looking more and more like he was offered up to finish off the party.
