Swedish Judge Supports Assange

NTDTV·Published on Apr 4, 2013

Assange who is fighting extradition to Sweden.

Full Story:

Julian Assange - seen here in London's Ecuadorian embassy where he has claimed diplomatic asylum - has a new voice of support.

The Wikileaks founder is fighting extradition to Sweden in connection with sexual assault allegations which the Australian says are trumped up charges.

But on Wednesday Stefan Lindskog, a senior Swedish judge, expressed his support for Assange saying he was right to mistrust the state.

{Stefan Lindskog, Swedish Supreme Court Judge}:
"It is sometimes necessary to view the different authorities of the state as heads of the vicious hydra"

Lindskog went on to say that in leaking confidential government files Assange has acted for the 'greater good'.

{Stefan Lindskog, Swedish Supreme Court Judge}:
"He will be thought of as a person who made public some pieces of classified information to the benefit of mankind"

Supporters of Assange fear that if extradited to Sweden, the freedom of information campaigner would then be extradited to the U.S. to face charges over leaking sensitive government information.

The Swedish government is reported to have spent nearly five million US dollars on a surveillance operation - watching the Ecuadorian embassy in case Mr Assange steps outside.
