Related: About this forumThom Hartmann: Let's start treating guns like cars...
In the United States - we don't let people who don't have valid drivers licenses get behind the wheel and go for a ride - because it's an issue of public safety. So whouldn't we use that same thinking - and start treating gun ownership like car ownership?

(33,982 posts)I tend to agree with your position, insofar as it applies to carrying guns in public via Concealed Pistol Licenses. We should probably extend such licensure to open carry, which generally doesn't require licensure in most/all states that allow it at all.
Analogy kinda falls over when you keep in mind most guns never leave the home.

(7,720 posts)Well, there is that piece of paper called the constitution. There is no mention of cars in it.
A more valid comparison would be guns to printing presses/web pages. If guns are to be registered and gun owners licensed, then printing presses and computers should be registered and their owners licensed.

(7,720 posts)I'm not saying we 'should' do any of what is being said on this thread. Comparing guns to printing presses/web pages is a more valid comparison because both are protected rights in the constitution, cars are not a protected right.

(12,882 posts)has been the intended function of guns from the outset? What has been the intended function of cars since their inception? For THAT matter - what does "well regulated" mean? Those two words weather the centuries well in my mind.

(4,695 posts)the sale and transfer are a state record which has to be recorded within 10 days.
This could be done for a gun at the Sheriff's Office. And the gun held there, until the transfer is legally completed with a back ground check, before the new owner is in receivership of the gun.
