http://blog.nss.org/?p=4065
Free copy of ONeills The High Frontier (until April 23)
The Space Studies Institute is offering a free electronic copy of Professor Gerard K. ONeills The High Frontier through Tuesday April 23. Its a Kindle edition, but you dont need a Kindle to read it. There is a free Kindle app to read it on computers, tablets, and smartphones. An Amazon account is required (also free).
In his classic 1977 book The High Frontier, ONeill mapped out a straightforward, manifestly doable path to putting humans into space permanently and sustainably, using current-day material and know-how. His message is key to the NSS Vision of People living and working in thriving communities beyond the Earth, and the use of the vast resources of space for the dramatic betterment of humanity.

(8,636 posts)1. I do recommend reading "The High Frontier"
I still have a hardcover copy of the first printing from 1976. This is truly an historical work.
Gerry O'Neill was way ahead of his time. People talking about space colonization today have gone back to the old 40s-50s concepts of domed cities on Mars instead of O'Neill's high orbit colonies.
O'Neill's original intuition is still valid; high orbit has big advantages:
- 24 hour solar energy,
- room for expansion, and
- you don't have to climb up and down a gravity well to get anywhere.
