"Sweet Caroline"-- even Yankees singing it!
Just heard it at the Giants game, then I come to find out it's being played and sung by crowds at many MLB games as a heartfelt love song for Boston. You know you're embraced when your arch rival sings your song just for you. Sweet! (Bonus: Article also tells us who 'Caroline' is too!)
When the New York Yankees set aside their historic rivalry with the Boston Red Sox and honored Boston Tuesday night with Sox anthem "Sweet Caroline," the gesture didn't go unappreciated.
Neil Diamond, who wrote and performed the song for the first time in 1969, tweeted his thanks, saying: "Thank you NY Yankees for playing 'Sweet Caroline' for the people of Boston. You scored a home run in my heart. With respect, Neil."
The Yankees weren't the only ones paying a tribute to the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon twin bombings their idea caught on and very soon "Sweet Caroline" was played across various MLB teams, including the Cleveland Indians, who played it when the Sox came up to bat in the first inning Tuesday night.

(11,833 posts)I didn't know Caroline Kennedy was the great granddaughter of Boston's first mayor.
Tip of the hat to NY Yankees, and especially to the great Neil Diamond.

(1,068 posts)This song was written about the sick, sexual infatuation Neil Diamond, at the time a man in his mid-20's, had for a nine-year old girl (Caroline Kennedy at the time). Ever since I found out about it, this song makes me sick to my stomach. I'm sorry that Boston Red Sox uses this song a lot, but I cannot celebrate this use of the song, even in celebration.

(1,540 posts)As Caroline Kennedy said recently during an interview, she learned the song was not about her but was written by Neil Diamond about his own love . Don't make something ugly that truly isn't......
Hate is hard to digest and plays havoc with the heart.
That's a really heavy, ugly accusation. Where did it come from? Do tell.
