Boston Marathon victim Jeff Bauman helped identify bombers

Jeff Bauman was looking for his girlfriend to finish the race when a man in a white cap and sweatshirt dropped a backpack at his feet. The explosion cost Mr Bauman, 27, both his legs.It has now emerged that Mr Bauman helped the FBI identify a suspect's photograph, telling the investigators that he looked in the eyes of Tamerlan Tsarnaev as he planted the bomb.

"He woke up under so much drugs, asked for a paper and pen and wrote, 'bag, saw the guy, looked right at me," the victim's brother, Chris Bauman said.
As Mr Bauman was treated in intensive care, he was interviewed by FBI agents and gave a description of the man he saw.

The Bauman family only found out what had happened to the injured man hours after the event, learned about it from the grisly image on television of their son being wheeled from the scene, his lower legs destroyed.

Carlos Arredondo, a cowboy-hat wearing bystander was hailed for saving Mr Baumans life.
As the second bomb went off 100 yards away, Mr Arredondo intervened to rescue Mr Bauman, stopping the bleeding from his legs.
"He had no legs. I told him, 'My name's Carlos, you're going to be OK, help is on the way.'"
He grabbed one of the first thing he saw that might work as a tourniquet – someone's sweater – which he ripped apart to stem the bleeding.

"That was a whole marathon," he said. "Getting people out of the way and getting him help.

After enduring so much personal pain, he was so willing to help another. A very inspirational act.

lived and was able to give witness that led to the capture.
This article has photos of Bauman pre bombing - very sad a life now with severe disability and also info about Arredondo's past ( 2 sons have passed other suicide).......

The day he learned his elder son had been killed, which also happened to be his 44th birthday, Mr Arredondo locked himself in a van with five gallons of gasoline and a propane torch and set the van on fire.
He survived, became a peace activist, and legally changed his name to Alexander Brian Arredondo in tribute to his sons. In 2006 he became an American citizen.
They were waiting for the last of the National Guard runners, representing Run for the Fallen Maine, an organization established to honor Marines who have been killed since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. One of those runners had dedicated the race to Mr Arredondo's son.

They were also there to support the suicide awareness group, Samaritans, which had a number of runners competing.
