40 years (and 1 day) after world’s first cellphone call, a Facebook phone

40 years on ...
Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the first cellphone call. Today highlights just how far we’ve come.

First, the history.

It was on April 3, 1973, that Martin Cooper of Motorola Inc. made the first-ever call from a mobile device, a rather big one at that.

As in, it wouldn’t fit in your pocket.

History records that Mr. Cooper called one Joel Engel of Bell Systems from 6 Avenue in New York City, on a DynaTAC phone.

Most of the size was in the receiver and the battery - which only lasted about an hour on full charge. Generally I kept it plugged in to the cigarette lighter in the car. Needless to say, coverage was very spotty.

And wired in directly I think ... so long ago! It's amazing how tiny they are now. I'm probably one of the few people left on earth who doesn't own one.

As an endocrinologist said when she asked for my cell number, and I said "I ain't got one."...

"That's impressive."
