Wendell Potter: Industry Pushes High-Deductible Insurance Plans

Those accustomed to obtaining health insurance through the workplace and choosing among different types of policies may be in for a rude surprise.

Increasingly, employers of all sizes are eliminating choice and offering only high-deductible plans — euphemistically referred to in the insurance world as consumer-directed health plans or HDHPs.

The looming shift has nothing to do with Obamacare or even the widely held belief that certain types of health plans will encourage people to give up costly bad habits like smoking. It is about profit.

The trend appears to be irreversible. Within the next few years, most Americans not only will find that the plans they’ve been enrolled in for years are no longer available, but that they will also have to pay much more out-of-pocket for medical care.

no claims and just collecting revenue. They only pay in catastrophic illnesses which is small compared to everyday sickness. It is everything that is wrong with our healthcare system.

agenda.

There are MANY people in this country that will blame "Obamacare" for their shittastic insurance policies and benefits over the next few years, and the insurance companies will be laughing all the way to the bank.

I have little doubt that insurance companies will be behaving very, very badly over the next few years.

"Obamacare" gives big business a pass to drastically cut health benefits to their employees since so many of their employees will blame Obama instead of their employers and the insurance industry. Many in the media will enable that lie.

We really do have a lot of incredibly stupid people in this country.
