NC Charter School Bill is Very Troubling
There are so many troubling things about Senate Bill 337, an N.C. charter school bill unveiled last week, that its hard to know where to start. But this item stands out like a sore thumb: The bill would remove the requirement that at least half of a charter schools teaching staff be certified, or be college educated.
OK. You thought all the teaching staff at an N.C. public school had to be certified, right? Thats only true of traditional public schools. Current law allows varying levels of certification at a charter school: At least 75 percent of teachers must be certified in kindergarten-5th grade; at least 50 percent in grades 6-12.
Additionally, current law requires that all charter school teachers in grades 6-12 who teach the core subjects of mathematics, science, social studies and language arts shall be college graduates.
Senate Bill 337 removes all those requirements.
Sounds crazy, doesnt it?

(2,978 posts)At RCHS, the state's top and very progressive charter high school, most of the teachers have master's degrees and many have PhDs, but despite college teaching experience, a lot weren't certified. I know colleges of ed well, and I don't think certification adds much to PhDs with teaching experience except a bureaucratic hurdle. And I know the school experienced/s it as a hurdle. 'Nuf said.
However, it's clear from the crazy GOP in our state that they're not worried about preventing PhDs with years of experience from teaching in charter schools, but instead interested in pushing more of their destructive agenda.
I'm with you. Now that they're overturning local governmental decisions (I'm waiting for them to find a way to overturn local elections), I think they're entering a new level of scary. Ending background checks? FFS.

(52,129 posts)often child molesters are finally banned from teaching by having their certifications revoked. NOw they can apply at these schools, won't have their records checked, and teach away while molesting.

(222 posts)Shouldn't all high school teachers be college graduates? Does anyone really want their senior in h.s., hoping to go to a good college and do well, to have a teacher with little to no more education than they do?

(21,646 posts)The bill takes authority away from the State Board of Education and creates a separate governing board for charters that allows it to adopt its own rules and regulation something legal scholars are already denouncing as unconstitutional. Board members would be selected by the governor and legislative leaders - currently all Republicans and there is no bar to those with financial or other interests in for-profit charters from serving.
