When Women Are Accused of Complicity
No system of female oppression can function, it seems, without women being complicit in it.
The 2016 election, in which 53 percent of white women opted to vote for a man who has bragged about assaulting women, showed that many women will prioritize their assumed economic security over the well-being of others. On the simplest level, money and power can act as powerful motivators. Before Maxwell met Epstein, shed suffered a decline in her own fortunes when her father, the media tycoon Robert Maxwell, drowned in 1991 after falling from his yacht, Lady Ghislaine, off the coast of the Canary Islands. After his death, it emerged that Maxwell had plundered hundreds of millions of pounds from his companys pension funds. His daughter was left with nothing but a personal trust granting her £80,000 a year. She fled to New York, leaving 32,000 of her fathers employees to deal with the emptying out hed done of their retirement accounts.
Maxwells indefinable relationship with Epstein seemed to restore her financial and social capitalhe apparently bought her a 7,000-square-foot townhouse on the Upper East Side, while his wealth renewed her access to socialites, playboys, and princes. But Epstein also seems to have had a hold on Maxwell that transcended status. She believed, according to reports in Vanity Fair, that if she did enough to please him, he would marry her. Maxwell allegedly had intimate knowledge of Epsteins predilections for girls and young women, and yet she appears to have hero-worshipped him anyway. She saw the girls she recruited for him, according to Vanity Fair, not as vulnerable teenagers, but as inconvenient obstacles to her ultimate goal, describing them as nothing and trash.
The truth is that, in the end, such purported betrayal of other womens trust seems to have its cost. Laterza lost her $2-million-a-year salary after Ailes was fired, and for her years of loyal service, he left her the relatively paltry sum of $30,000 in his will, from an estate totaling more than $100 million. Maxwell is the target of a new lawsuit accusing her of enabling Epsteins abuse.

(8,709 posts)It sure would explain a lot.
All I know of their relationship is that she was the favorite of his 9 children. And she vehemently believes his death was murder and not accidental drowning.

(10,151 posts)They think the Nazis won't hurt them because they are white, or pretty, or helpful or special somehow. Judas goats carefully trained to lead the lambs to slaughter.
But the truth is women don't matter to those kind of men. Women are things not adults, not people to them. Only men are people to Epstein and Traitor Trump. So women don't get treated fairly or equally no matter what race or age. The only one to die in the Nazi rally in Charlottesville was a white woman. That tells you how Nazis and white supremacist really feel about women. They'll kill them if they get in the way.

(33,643 posts)The victim in Charlottesville was just a person in a crowd that asshole plowed into. People of both genders were injured, some severely. A woman just happened to be the one who died.
That guy was driven by hate for LIBERALS, period, IMHO.
Just sayin'

(10,151 posts)Or merely an unexpected opportunity for an abuser or killer. But the very fact that the white supremacist didn't care that he might kill a white woman, or man for that matter, shows what people are in his protected class. It's Not ALL white people who he thinks are supreme. Just white people who think exactly like him.
But isn't it weird that the only person to die in a white supremacist rally was a white women. It's like the universe is trying to tell us something.

(8,709 posts)my head around it. The only thing I can ascribe this to is not only are we programmed to be kind but wealth shuts down this biological function, discussed at about 2:46 of the following video. But if this pattern of failure is the inevitable result then I'm looking forward to the day soon when Ivanka and Melania get their karmic reckoning.

We really should outlaw the accumulation of excess wealth. It really does make these filthy rich people a danger to a peaceful society.

(24,555 posts)How these women could lead young girls to suffer abuse and degradation by monsters is beyond my comprehension. Yet I know many women who voted for trump and that is also a great betrayal of their gender. smh

(10,151 posts)If you care even a little about others, you can't take more and more away from them and hoard it all for yourself. How can you live in a 100 room mansion when people are homeless and hungry?
They have to convince themselves that God gave them the wealth because they are better than most everyone. Or everyone could be rich like them if they only pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. It's poor people's fault they are poor, not rich people's fault they hoard all the nation's wealth.
There was a science fiction storey where a filthy rich idiot became so unaware of the misery around him that he literally could not see his servants and the poor. Things would just magically appear when he called for them. He eventually ended up on display...well he couldn't see the people gawking at him.

(8,709 posts)My husband just came home finding me weeping over this article, family members, girlfriends and male friends I've known in life damaged by child predators. One of my girlfriends was lured by another girl her age whose father kept her hostage for hours of abuse. He let her go but she never told anyone because of shame and feeling stupid. She's a pediatrician now.
As guillaumeb said up thread this betrayal may start early by girls who were abused themselves.

I hope Maxwell does the right thing and reveals all the secrets of the powerful that she knows. But I'm not holding my breath.

for protecting the oceans. A totally worthwhile cause but unfortunately the U.S. branch shut down in July after Epstein's sex-trafficking case re-emerged. So maybe she'll segue that bit of philanthropy directly to other humans. Especially with the money it's costing her in at least 3 civil litigation cases, I can only hope that she spills it.
