Issa faces Democratic challenger in new 49th
Source: OC Register
Republican incumbent for the 49th Congressional District, Darrell Issa, and the real estate broker challenging him for his congressional seat this election cycle share the same hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. But finding similarities between their political beliefs is another story.
Democrat Jerry Tetalman has lived in Carlsbad since 1997 and plans on running a grassroots campaign against Issa. Issa is the second richest man in Congress, with his assets totaling roughly $240 million as of 2011. Even with the new district lines the party registration is 43 percent Republican and 29 percent Democrat.
Tetalman believes he has a fighting chance despite Issas incumbency and monetary advantage, and the GOP voter registration advantage.
I think if you look at the richest man in Congress you have a disconnect between the average person that is working for a living who is not an investor, Tetalman said. I see he is really out of touch with the average person and their needs, he doesnt represent the interest of working class people.

I have talked with him on the phone and Tetalman is going hard, working full time to give Issa a run.

(2 posts)I can understand that sentiment, but my gut tells me there could be a big enough backlash against Issa to be more competitive than you might be giving credit for. I've heard a number of people saying they'll vote against Issa, but don't know who's running against him. That's how I figured out it was Tetalman. Had to Google it. But now I'm on board and going to see if we can't grass roots campaign Issa right out of Washington. If you still aren't convinced to contribute, at least go to Jerry's Facebook page and "like" his page so you can keep up with the race and perhaps help out by spreading the word. http://www.facebook.com/JerryTetalmanforCongress

(8,692 posts)Last go-around we ran Basil Marceaux with teeth and before that we ran the Sarah Palin of Huntington Beach and before that a bored .com millionaire who couldn't be bothered to campaign. And now we have Ron Varasteh who having openly supported the laughable losers of Occupy Irvine is unelectable having written his own attack ads.
The RNC has left Rohrabacher for dead half a dozen times, and every time we rise to the occasion and find a weaker candidate still to run against him.

And even though statute of limitations are over for him, he still needs to be tried for treason against the United States

The cars that he lifted were small potatoes compared with burning down his own business for an insurance claim.

Now I just hang up when I get the invite calls. Waste of time. He just wants people to think he actually cares about what they have to say.

(53,339 posts)He didn't have much chance against Issa's entrenched power--and it isn't even my district--but I felt I needed to do something.
As a nice surprise, I received a handwritten thankyou card from our candidate.

(2 posts)Hey, obviously everyone on this thread seems aware of this race and what it means. Not a surprise to say that it will be an uphill climb to face the wealthiest man in Congress, but it's got to start somewhere. If you are on Facebook, go to Jerry's Facebook page and "like" his page so you can keep up with the race and perhaps help out by spreading the word. THANKS!
