Glimpse of Bliss: Rare Photos of John & Jackie Head to Auction (Georgetown U- September 1953)

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Turborama (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The London Daily Mail

Photos of a young John and Jacqueline Kennedy just months after their wedding have been put up for auction, showing the early years of America’s most famous first couple. Photographer Orlando Suero was a staffer for Three Lions Picture Agency and he pitched the idea of following around the couple for a week to see what their life was really like.

The resulting collection of photos, now being sold by RR Auction, show some candid and intimate moments for the couple. The power couple is seen posing on the steps of the Capitol, but the more unscripted moments- like when Jackie adjusts John's tie before a gala or when she sits in a classroom at Georgetown University- are the ones that stand out the most.

Their wedding in September 1953 gained national attention and the chance to capitalize on that popularity was seen as a keen public relations move in Kennedy's strategic mind.

The collection of photos on sale at show them smiling adoringly at one another, with Jackie at his side while he does work from home, holding hands while walking down the cobbled sidewalks of Georgetown, and climbing the steps to the Capitol as a prelude to the role that politics would play in their legacies.

I had a pixie hairstyle back then, it was a very popular, but I can't recall ever seeing Jackie with a short haircut. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn.

Thanks for posting these!

and she did have that short-haired, gamin look then. (Won the Oscar for Roman Holiday that year, though the movie came out the previous year.) I had never previously seen Jackie Kennedy with hair that short, either.

but, actually, when I think of it, we have progressed a lot, especially women and the LBGT community and the election of an African American president. It's politically that we've suffered. After the enormously popular JFK was gone, and then MLK, and then RFK, the Democratic party started to move more to the right. Liberal bashing became the cause of the day. People forgot the hope and inspiration the Kennedy brothers and Dr. King gave us. Liberals were strong and proud with these popular voices. No one since has come close..

I think as a wonderful example of an American family, you can't top our current First Family. I couldn't be more proud to have the Obama's in the White House. President Obama isn't the fiery liberal JFK was, but he's the right man for the times. I honestly believe that if America survives the current political mess, we will owe it all to the man we elected twice for our President.

She had one of the most sensuous faces this side of Angelina Jolie. My mother damn near worshipped her - LOVED her style and taste and class and understated elegance. Wouldn't let me get shoes with rhinestones and other fancy stuff on them - she thought everything should be plain and elegant, the way Jackie did it.

Michelle Obama reminds me of Jackie Kennedy in terms of understated class and elegance.

Those were the days... Thanks for posting, big_dog!

My mom is a right-wing whack-o, and was on a tear about how unseemly it was for Michelle Obama to have bare arms at such an event--- and in the winter, for god's sake! (Who does she think she is, anyway?!) Then, I emailed my mom a picture of Jackie Kennedy wearing a sleeveless dress in the same situation. (Apparently, bare WHITE arms are less offensive to some people...) Didn't make a bit of difference to her, of course, cuz haters gotta hate.

These are wonderful pictures! Jackie is stunning in them. I couldn't get over how much her daughter looks like her in the picture where she's lighting the candles. I always thought Caroline resembled her father more and saw very little of Jackie in her, but now that I see these pictures of her as a younger woman, I see Caroline in her too!

Those were some amazing times for those of us who are old enough to remember. My parents absolutely worshipped them, especially Jackie. She was a 100% class act. My sisters and I would read every detail about her in Life and Look magazines and talk about her clothes, the kids, everything. After Ike and Maimie they were a breath of fresh air.

Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures.
