FDA: Morning-after pill to move over-the-counter

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Plan B morning-after pill is moving over-the-counter, a decision announced by the Food and Drug Administration just days before a court-imposed deadline.
Tuesday, the FDA lowered to 15 the age at which girls and women can buy the emergency contraceptive without a prescription - and said it no longer has to be kept behind pharmacy counters.
Instead, the pill can sit on drugstore shelves just like condoms, but that buyers would have to prove their age at the cash register.
Earlier this month, a federal judge had ruled there should be no age restrictions and gave the FDA 30 days to act. The FDA said its latest decision was independent of the court case.

"The Obama Administration has effectively announced it will not abide by a judge's ruling last month ordering the so-called morning after pill to be made available without a prescription to women of all ages. Instead, the administration is offering what it seems to hope will be seen as a middle ground."

(55,007 posts)but getting it over the counter now is a good thing (remembering my teen years, it wasn't too hard to get somebody else to make purchases for you so that is a slightly less than legal but at least a better than nothing work-around, and a hell of a lot better than trying to get a surgical abortion under those same circumstances)
you are totally correct it is fucked that the Administration won't follow the ruling.

but I have no doubt they will bill it as such, and I suspect most of the right wing media won't do their jobs and call them on it

RU486 is a modern miracle, though.

(10,103 posts)If a 12 year old has sex, the plan B pill is much easier on her system than trying to carry a child to term. Trying to keep this away from teens has deleterious effects.

(10,565 posts)Just make it over-the-counter regardless of age, as the American Academy of Pediatrics has been advocating for a long time.

(51,666 posts)the condoms are kept under lock and key, and good luck finding a clerk at the drug store to open the cabinet for you to make your selection.
Technically OTC, but still a PITA to purchase.

How's that going to play against the Fed's decision?
Will it end up with SCOTUS?
