Raped 5-Year-Old Girl Dies in Central India

NEW DELHI April 30, 2013 (AP)
A 5-year-old girl has died after being raped in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, an official said Tuesday, in the latest in a series of brutal attacks that have sparked outrage in the country.
The girl suffered cardiac arrest and died late Monday at a hospital in Nagpur city in neighboring Maharashtra state where she was being treated for injuries from the April 18 assault, said Bharat Yadav, collector for Seoni district, where the attack occurred.
Two men have been arrested in connection with the attack, he said.
The girl was lured by one of the men to a farm, where she was then raped by the other man, who was a friend of her parents, Yadav said. The parents, poor construction workers, were at work when the attack occurred, he said.

And may western "comedians" that have recently made rape a tag line for their "humor" rot in hell. Rape culture is NOT confined to India and other foreign lands.

(6,143 posts)I'm wondering, is this really a "series of attacks", or is it the norm that has gone on for generations, and due to {x} is now just coming to light?
Solving for {x} is the hard part; more self-reporting, more cell phone cameras, more media attention, .. etc.

(15,774 posts)but a seismic shift in the culture of 'eve baiting', or the acceptable harassment of women in the Indian culture. More stories like this are printed in the front page instead of whispered gossip.
I can't emphasis how deeply the gang rape and murder of the young woman in New Deli shook India to the core. Women now feel free to speak out about it and are wanting action. Funny thing is more than a few law makers in India have charges pending on harassment. They have been getting away with it for years. The assualt of a child this young is beyond the pale...even in India. I would expect harsh treatment if publicity follows.
In fact there was a story of a famous female bandit that survived a childhood marriage/rape. Terrorized men in the countryside for years. Not your usual Bollywood fare but it was a good movie...if you don't mind subtitles.

(15,481 posts)system. HAving a girl baby means you will pay a dowry to marry her. As a generation grew up, the ratio of men to women changed, way out of normality.
I dont know the numbers, but there are not enough women. Men started "stealing women, kidnapping them" to marry them.
There must be in interlinking of these rapes with the entire demeaning created by the dowry, boys are better, culture./
Women have been fighting the dowry system for many years in India.

(15,774 posts)where men are valued more than women. I don't know of wife kidnapping in India on a large scale but this same thing you speak of is happening in areas of rural China. Women are being abducted and never returned to their families. There is a historical cultural acceptance of this which makes it all the harder to rid.
My Hubby is from India and he has helped arrange a marriage for both his youngest sister and niece. I was totally against arranged marriages until I saw how they work (when done properly). You have a better chance being admitted into Harvard.
Both women were educated and he looked for dowry free as we thought they were their own dowry. The parents of his brother in law insisted on a dowry although the BIL did not want it and got mad at his mother when she tried to jack it up. He settled that argument with his mom. The most important thing was that both women were consulted extensively during the process and everyone went into it in with the right mindset. And I might add, Hubby's family is one that respects women.
Both women are very happy and have sound marriages. My niece just had her first baby and my SIL just sent off her child to college last year.
This world can be a cruel, sick place at times...

Does anyone not think rape exists or that it should be condemned?

(247 posts)crimes in India is a reflection of something taking place in their
culture we can all learn from. There seems to many to be an increase
in violence towards women globally. The US is not immune to this. Just
thinking about some of the anti-women legislation passed in the last
few years concerning women's health issues is cause for concern.
Just watched an Acadamy Award nominated documentary of the
violence towards women in our military with 1 in 4 women being
victims of rape or assault.
Something is changing and we need to pay attention. I have to imagine
many women sense this and the data would back it up.
