Obama On Syria Response: ‘It Is Important For Us To Do This In A Prudent Way’

Source: TPM

During a news conference Tuesday at the White House, President Obama said the U.S. needs to tread carefully in its response to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

"It is important for us to do this in a prudent way," Obama said, according to a rush transcript. "What I've said to my team is we have to do everything we can to investigate and establish with some certainty what exactly has happened in Syria, what is happening in Syria. We will use all the assets and resources that we have at our disposal, we will work with the neighboring countries and we have called on the united nations to investigate."

Obama: ‘I’ve Got To Make Sure We’ve Got The Facts’ On Syria

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that the United States should not rush into further involvement into the bloody Syrian conflict, but should rather thoroughly investigate initial intelligence assessments that concluded chemical weapons were likely used by the Assad regime.

"And what we now have is evidence that chemical weapons have been used inside of Syria, but we don't know how they were used, when they were used -- who used them," Obama told reporters at a press conference in Washington. "We don't have a chain of custody that establishes what exactly happened. And when I am making decisions about America's national security and the potential for taking additional action, in response to chemical weapon use, I've got to make sure I've got the facts."

He added: "That's what the American people would expect. And if we end up rushing to judgment without hard effective, evidence, then we can find ourselves in a position where we can't mobilize the international community to support what we do. There may be objections even among some people in the region who are sympathetic with the opposition if we take action."

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced last week that U.S. intelligence had concluded with "some degree of varying confidence" that Assad had likely used chemical weapons against the rebels on a “small scale.” That disclosure led to several Republican senators, including John McCain (AZ) and Lindsey Graham (SC), to declare that a "red line" was crossed, requiring further action from the United States.

9. So, you would prefer a Sunni majority mafia?

Which branch of Sunni Jihadi do you prefer? Salaafist or Ikhwan or al-Sahwa?

Thanks for acknowledging that this war is essentially a festering religious vendetta between Muslim factions that goes back decades and centuries. At least that's more honest than trying to pretend it's about humanitarian intervention and democracy.

13. Turkey is 80% Sunni and has a functioning democracy. Just because a country is majority Sunni

does not mean a "Sunni majority mafia" (as if Assad does not run a "Shia minority mafia&quot is inevitable.

Are you arguing against majority rule? If so does that argument just apply in Sunni majority countries? Should Whites still be ruling South Africa? They were about a 20% minority and there were plenty of whites who were afraid of a "Black majority mafia". South Africa even had a veneer of democracy in that whites got to vote for their government - something that Shia, Alawites, Christians and other minorities in Syria (much less the Sunni majority) never got to do.

15. I am not arguing that about Turkey.

But, if the other poster wants to equate the Assad regime with a mafia, my question to her stands.

Furthermore, I am not arguing against majority rule, but as in other cases where nations in the former Ottoman Empire were carved up by White Hall and Paris after World War One, and favored minorities were installed under the previous colonial regimes (Iraq and Lebanon are other "lines in the sand" states) the outcome of religious and ethnic based civil war in Syria was almost inevitable.

That internal centripetal dynamic of religious and ethnic strife is currently being exploited by regional powers and third-parties, and under these conditions it is unlikely that you will see a peaceful transition to democratic self-rule (as desirable as that is). What is much more likely is long-term Balkanization and ethnic cleansing, a form of persistent genocidal war that I would argue is probably the worst possible outcome.

We are allies with Saudi Arabia, whose oppressiveness makes her neighbors look like Scandanavia.

It's about some combination of oil, gas, pipeline routes, international banking, or Israel or it wouldn't be an issue at all (and there likely wouldn't be a civil war).

One has to wonder why they went off-script all of a sudden. Such remarkable message discipline until now.

If you see me walking down the street
And I start to cry each time we meet
Walk on by, walk on by

Make believe
That you don't see the tears
Just let me grieve
In private 'cause each time I see you
I break down and cry
And walk on by (don't stop)
And walk on by (don't stop)
And walk on by

I just can't get over losing you
And so if I seem broken and blue
Walk on by, walk on by

Foolish pride
Is all that I have left
So let me hide
The tears and the sadness you gave me
When you said goodbye
Walk on by
And walk on by
And walk by (don't stop)

Walk on by, walk on by
Foolish pride
Is all that I have left
So let me hide
The tears and the sadness you gave me
When you said goodbye
Walk on by (don't stop)
And walk on by (don't stop)
And walk by (don't stop)

There won't be any war (until Congress and President "fix" it, just like they did the FAA controller problem, so they could fly away on vacation...)

we would be at war already. Sending our children over there to fight for profit. In my opinion thats all it is. I do feel for the Syrians but overall they need the support of the countries across the world. Of course, Israel want us to blindly go in immediately.

We don't want to speculate, and have another Iraq on our hands, that's the last thing the U.S. and Syria needs.
