General Assembly Police Chief Jeff Weaver warned the protesters to disperse three times before arresting them.
Most protesters left, but 17 refused to move. The protestors sang We Shall Overcome and other civil rights-era songs as Raleigh police officers put plastic zip ties on their wrists and led them away. Weaver said the protesters arrested will likely face charges of disorderly conduct, second-degree trespass and violation of building rules, all misdemeanors.
At one point, Republican state Rep. Michael Speciale, a New Bern Republican, poked his head around a hallway corner to watch the demonstration. He suggested the action wont make difference in the lawmaking.
They have a right to protest; we have a right to disagree, he said. If we are here to do what is right for North Carolina, then we are doing the right thing.
Two years ago, Barber and six others were arrested for interrupting a legislative session to protest the state budget. The latest arrests are part of an ongoing series of demonstrations across the state. There must be an act that dramatizes the shameful agenda, Barber said. Nobody ... can say they dont know whats happening North Carolina.

GOP cowards hide behind security and stifle debate. Typical.
Article is from May of 2011.

(40,366 posts)Heres a challenge for you. Try to explain what is happening in North Carolina these days to someone who doesnt follow politics or government and limit yourself to a minute or even two.
You cant do it. The damage being inflicted on the state by this radical and reactionary General Assembly is too vast and is happening too quickly to even catalogue, much less explain.
Lawmakers, who have only been in session a little over two months, have already refused to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, denying health care to 500,000 low-income adults even though the federal government would pick up the full cost of the expansion for three years and 90 percent of the cost after that.
<snip>.
All bets are off on public education too. There are bills to divert public school money to home schoolers and turn teachers into glorified temps in the classroom. Senate leaders are trying to remove whats left of accountability for charter schools by setting up a parallel and likely unconstitutional governance system to oversee them. A sweeping voucher scheme is coming soon.
Exhausted yet? Theres more. Predatory payday lending has surfaced again backed by faux research by the think tanks on Right Wing Avenue. And the consumer finance industry is back pushing for more exorbitant interest rates to charge people when they most vulnerable.
..more..

(2,198 posts)being a North Carolinian these days while idiots and lunatics are ruining our state through the elected representative sent to Raleigh. I cringe each day reading the newspaper to see what they next plan to change...education, voter id, doing away with some of the UNC programs etc...the list goes on and on. Our state is so screwed up now...Shameful!

(84,711 posts)I think folks are waking up to what's being done. It's slow...though. It's like we woke up after the thrill of having NC turn Blue and vote for Obama and then in '12 seeing years of progress just blow up in our faces.
There's a lot of blame to go around. Fixing this is going to take longer than it did to undo it. But, actions like yesterdays with the arrests and also all those who took time off jobs to show up at the legislature last month to voice their disapproval (there were packed chamber hearing rooms) over the "Voting Disenfranchisement Poll Tax"...in two sessions was a wake up call that these crazies are going too far. Already there's push back on them wanting throw out the elected City Councils, Boards of Education members and replace them with Tea Party Repugs. They are reaching too far. But, they will still get much of what they want. They need to be voted out in 2014 and then what they did can be dismantled. If we can find aggressive Real Dems.

(90 posts)I read the linked article and all of the comments, but what exactly
were those folks protesting? The Republican's agenda in general,
or was there something in particular?

(40,366 posts)They emphasized that their grievance goes deeper than a bill recently approved in the House that would require voters to present photo identification at the polls; they argued Republican policies refusing a federal Medicaid expansion, cutting unemployment benefits, eliminating the earned income tax credit and other measures limiting voting options expose the hypocrisy of a party that professes love of biblical scripture. Republicans took control of the legislature after the 2010 mid-term elections.
