In a move that all but guarantees the Sacramento Kings are staying put, a committee of NBA owners voted unanimously today to block the team's pending sale and relocation to Seattle.
The NBA announced that its combined relocation and finance advisory committee, composed of 12 owners, voted unanimously to reject the Maloof family's proposed sale of the Kings to hedge fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who planned to move the team to Seattle.
The Maloof family had no immediate comment. One of the Sacramento bidders, San Francisco tech executive Andy Miller, said on Twitter, "Here we stay! Kings and Sacramento's future is very bright."
A Hansen spokesman had no immediate comment.

Updated at 3:15 pm PT. And Damon Bruce recently made a good point in a recent show, if the Kings rightfully won the 2002 Western Conference Finals despite the refs seeming to side w/the Lakers (Tim Donaghy, anyone?) there'd not even be discussion of a relocation! 3:30 of video.

(4,238 posts)and I certainly understand those opposing keeping the team; they definitely have some valid points. But it appears the revenue the team generates for the city is also an advantage. We don't live in Sacramento, but we go to a couple of Kings games every season. Each time we travel there, we'll spend money in the city -- dinner in downtown, or some other activity pre-game. For valley residents who enjoy sports, it's nice having a "local" team to root for.

(12,325 posts)Building this new arena and the traffic, parking etc. will suck big time. And who the fuck is going to pay for it. The Maloofs owe Sacramento millions all ready. And another thing, The Sacramento Monarchs. Who have won a championship and the Maloofs (fucks) folded the team. Fucks
The Sacramento Monarchs were a basketball team based in Sacramento, California. They played in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) from 1997 until folding on November 20, 2009.[
SAN FRANCISCO -- The Sacramento Monarchs folded on Friday, a shocking and disappointing development for the WNBA and one of its original eight franchises.
The decision was largely based on the Maloof family's desire to focus all its energy and efforts on the NBA's Sacramento Kings. Maloof Sports & Entertainment had owned both teams

(5,732 posts)He has a very narrow agenda. Keeping the Kings, forcing the arena down our throats, and grabbing more power for himself. Worst mayor in the 40 years I have lived in Sacramento.

However, I agree a new arena is a bad deal for the city.

(4,238 posts)They were the ones pushing to sell to Seattle. They know how much that team means not only to Sacramento, but the greater surrounding area. But if you can make a few million more to add to the millions you already have, what the hell, right?

(32,992 posts)I wouldn't mind seeing the Sonics come back. Many people do care about it passionately, many more than your flippant dismissal implies.
Seattle got robbed by Stern & OKC. Sacramento got thrown a lifeline by Stern. Double standards.

(32,992 posts)You need a 2nd team?
Our metro region is 4.2 million people, and Stern let OKC, with 1.2 million, take it away as an object lesson to every other city.

(2,682 posts)the despite the lack of a TEAM, the plans to build yet another arena are on-going. Now that's the epitomy of stupidity, in my opinion. I still don't understand the building of the other two arenas. Baseball is played in the spring and summer; football is played in the fall and winter -- so why did they have to build TWO arenas. Waste of money and resources. Yes, you might have figured out I'm one that doesn't give a fart in a windstorm whether a basketball team ever comes back here.
