Mexican Official's Daughter Gets Restaurant Closed

Mexican Official's Daughter Gets Restaurant Closed
By MARK STEVENSON Associated Press
MEXICO CITY April 29, 2013 (AP)

A Mexican official's daughter has caused a scandal by sending inspectors to shut down a restaurant that didn't give her the table she wanted.

It's the latest of several cases of seeming arrogance by the wealthy and well-connected that have caused anger recently in a country with deep class divisions.

"As a society, we are fed up with, disgusted with this," said writer Guadalupe Loaeza. "This is an attitude of the past; it doesn't fit with the times."

The government said Monday it has launched an investigation into the incident over the weekend at an upscale Mexico City bistro.

Andrea Benitez, the daughter of the federal attorney general for consumer protection, Humberto Benitez Trevino, went to the restaurant and apparently didn't get the table she wanted or had been promised. Just hours after the incident, inspectors showed up with official "suspended" signs to punish the restaurant.

I have four adult children who do not consult me before taking action.

Not that they have done mean-spirited things such as this Mexican lady, but they have done and do to this day things that I would not counsel them to do.

Anyone who has children of a certain age knows they cut the strings and act on their own.

Buuuuuttt;

She sent government types back.

Either she has the cojones to have ordered the 'hit', or she bitched enough that her dad made the call himself.

That was her acting on her own. - Misguided and spoiled child that she is.

I have seen no reason to believe Daddy did it.
He's probably embarrassed and fit to be tied.

My goal was to emphasize the level of privilege enjoyed by the tiny group of elites controlling Mexican society. It is something of interest to DEMOCRATS.

Many of us are far more concerned with deeper aspects of living than the right seems to be capable of grasping.

How does that work, exactly? Pray tell.
As for this, it's a comment on your stunning naivete when it comes to how Latin America works. Do you really think it's any different in any of your favored countries? The only one where I'm not too sure this wouldn't be standard behavior is Brazil.
BTW, my wife is Mexican. She found it funny that this was news, and believe me she didn't grow up rich. She ain't no rightie either.

Not a LACK of a problem ..... The problem itself is newsworthy to most decent human beings who expect democracies to improve the state of regular citizens over time ...

One has to be pretty fucking cynical to cede all expectations of fairness just because more than one person is unfair.

Those favored countries have serious problems, and it is the OP's right to post them how she sees them ....

You could have always dismissed the thread and moved on to a better one ... more to your liking ....

...and you'll see that Judi (@ 77K+ posts) is the rather, Resident Expert on how Latin America works. At least she is in my book. And I might add that sniffing at this type of corruption as simply: ''how Latin America works'' seems contrary to your prior stated attitude on the subject.

Or does that just apply to US bankers and corrupt US politicians?

But it looks like daddy fixed matters. I hope that he also cut her allowance and took away her credit cards.

Benitez Trevino issued a statement apologizing for "the inappropriate behavior of my daughter Andrea." While he didn't explicitly say his daughter sicced the inspectors on the eatery, his apology implied she did.

"She exaggerated the situation and the officials of the Attorney General's Office for Consumer Protection, which I head, overreacted because it was my daughter," he wrote. "Immediately upon hearing of the situation, I ordered the raid (on the restaurant) suspended, to avoid any excesses."

The Economy Department, which oversees Benitez Trevino's office, said President Enrique Pena Nieto had ordered the federal comptroller's office to open an investigation into the case.

I've only been there once, but everything I saw was according to my expectation: a small wealthy white elite living the "American dream" while the masses of mestizos slave away.
