Reports Of An Explosion At The Marathon Detroit Refinery

Source: WWJ

DETROIT (WWJ) – BREAKING – WWJ listeners report that there has been an explosion at the Marathon Detroit Refinery.

Reports of the explosion came in from several listeners to WWJ Newsradio 950 and it appears that one of the tankers on the site may have exploded.

Marathon Detroit Refinery told WWJ that they were trying to get the situation under control but could not comment further.

The refinery is on the borderline of Melvindale – the fire department there said they have not been asked to respond as the explosion took place within the refinery. A HazMat team has been dispatched from the Detroit Fire Department and is on the scene.

1. Yeah, let's just de-regulate everything.

Great idea.

I realize we don't know what is going on here, yet. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was more of that don't-interfere-with-bidness Republican deregulation.

I very much hope that no one was hurt.

Apr 2013

Detroit firefighters say diesel fuel in a tanker at the Marathon Refinery on Fort street is on fire. Smoke can be seen for miles around and air quality concerns have forced officials to evacuated residents near the fire.
Firefighters have two trucks at the scene streaming water and two trucks streaming foam.
Hazmat is also on the scene.

The City of Melvindale is ordering a partial evacuation of the city due to the refinery fire. They are concerned about air quality from the fire.
The city is asking all residents between Wall Street and I-75 to leave their homes. Residents can head to the Melvindale Ice Arena for further instructions from Police. Police are currently going door to door to get residents out.
Witnesses tell 7 Action News they felt the explosions from two blocks away.

Michigan State Police have closed ramps from I-75 to Schaefer in both directions.

10. And no Detroit stations seem to be airing coverage of this.

Since I don't have a TV, whenever there's some kind of breaking news I count on local stations to go to live streaming coverage. Maybe this really is relatively trivial. Maybe Saturday evening is usually slow enough that none of the stations have the staff to do this.

But slightly odd, I think.

All of the oil companies will need multiple, multiple billions of dollars to repair the damage to the one tanker owned by one company...
