Loved George Jones singing and choice of songs since I was a little kid, since he hit the big time with this song, way back in the mid '50s

(28,552 posts)..... I don't listen to much country but there are a handful of artists worthy of word, including Hank, Jones, Cash and Nelson. For pure vocal talent it is hard to beat George Jones.

(2,977 posts)We spent many a college dorm drunkfest with ole' George singing in the background. Amazing that he had the long life he did, with all the drinking and drugs.

(13,091 posts)My dads all time favorite !!!!
I know the words to all his songs.
Heard them until 4:00 am in the morning many times.
I always told my dad, (who is now deceased) if I won the lottery I would pay for George to visit dad and play and sing with him.
My dad played the guitar, self taught, my mom also played, self taught, my uncle played the banjo, my 2 sisters, my brother and I were the singers.
My dad always called him 'possum eyes'.
RIP George

(11,481 posts)his "Farewell Tour".
I've got a pretty good George Jones story. Back in 1979 when he was really going hard and crazy with cocaine, alcohol, and paranoia, my buddy and I were coming home from a gig at about 3 AM. We were stopped at the light at Harding and Linbar, when this big assed Caddy pulled up beside us. My buddy looked over and said " Hey, that's George Jones!" I looked over and, sure as hell, it was. Well, we were normally pretty blasé about country stars, but come on, this was George Jones, so we started waving and pointing and generally acting fools. He looked over, pulled out this big pistol, held it up, and rolled down his window and said, "You boys want something?" We didn't even blink, we just said "No sir, Mr. Jones, we just love your music." The light picked that moment to turn green and he zipped off down the road.

This is really sad news. I've worked all over the world and always had George Jones music with me, in one media or another. Nothing could cure a spell of homesickness like that big, uniquely American voice of his.
Here's one of my faves, "The Grand Tour." As some critic once wrote: "If this doesn't break your heart, you don't have one."
Some things I know will chill you to the bone...
