Man investigated in poisoned letters missing

Source: Associated Press

OZARK, Miss. -- Authorities in Mississippi say they are searching for the chief person of interest in the investigation of poisoned letters sent to President Barack Obama and other officials.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson says he is helping the FBI, which told him Everett Dutschke had been under surveillance but slipped away on Wednesday.

Itawamba deputies searched a home in Ozark where Dickinson said Dutschke was believed to have been on Wednesday. They found no one.

The sheriff says he believes a friend of Dutschke "may be helping him to lay low."

FBI spokeswoman Deborah Madden would not comment on the search.

Dutschke did not answer his cellphone when AP tried to contact him on Thursday.

Charges in the case were dropped against an earlier suspect.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Wow. First they charge the wrong guy based on a Facebook reference and then they let the prime suspect escape from under their noses. WTF is wrong with this picture?

By the time Curtis left jail, authorities were descending on Dutschke's house in Tupelo, a search lasting hours that day.

On Wednesday, dozens of investigators were searching at a small retail space where neighboring business owners said Dutschke used to operate a martial arts studio. Officers at the scene wouldn't comment on what they were doing.

Investigators in gas masks, gloves and plastic suits emerged from the business carrying five-gallon buckets full of items covered in large plastic bags. Once outside, others started spraying their protective suits with some sort of mist.

Dutschke was seen outside the studio observing the search.

Talk about losing the scent. The guy was standing there while they searched.

there was this in the earlier AP article at the link:

By the time Curtis left jail, authorities had descended on Dutschke's house in Tupelo and conducted a search that lasted for hours. Dutschke told the AP on Wednesday morning that he and his wife had gone to a friend's house because they didn't feel safe at their home.

"They ripped everything out of the house," he said, adding: "I haven't slept at all."

If he isn’t at that friend’s house, maybe he and his wife are at another friend’s house, or at a motel.

It could be that the FBI merely wants to tell him he can go home now because nothing suspicious was found.

I remember reading last week about that police raid on the suspected meth lab where the owner of the house told the cops, "Sure go ahead and search. I'm just going to go over to friends house. Talk to you later." Happens all the time.

After all, it is not like there was some Federal crime involved.

OWS committed a serious strategic error by demonstrating at Wall Street instead of in Washington, DC. They were never going to convince Wall Street Bankers to mend their ways. But they might have convinced some in Washington to regulate them.

I hope they can revive some sort of movement.

Anti-war demonstrations in the 60s got off to a rough start. However, they didn't give up they eventually made an impact.

Dutschke's attorney Lori Basham wrote in a text to The Associated Press that authorities know where her client is and that he continues to cooperate. She says there is no warrant for his arrest.

so he'd be in trouble if he disappeared, whatever the outcome of the ricin case.

TUPELO – Karate instructor James Everett Dutschke faces three state indictments that he fondled three females under the age of 16.

Dutschke, 41, of Tupelo pleaded not guilty during his April 15 arraignment and is free on $25,000 bond.
...
The documents claim that Dutschke’s alleged unlawful “touching” of one girl, now 18, occurred between January 2007 and March 2011.

The second alleged incidents involved a girl now 8 from November 2012 to January 2013.

The third charge claims he fondled a 7-year-old girl on Jan. 16, 2013.
