Officials: Boston suspects discussed second attack in Times Square

Source: NBC

By Jonathan Dienst, Jeff Rossen, Richard Esposito and Erin McClam, NBC News

The surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect has told investigators that he and his brother discussed detonating the rest of their explosives in Times Square, senior law enforcement officials told NBC News on Thursday.

The surviving suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, initially told investigators that they planned to go to New York to party after the Boston attack, the officials said. The New York police commissioner also gave this account Wednesday.

Under subsequent questioning, the officials said, Tsarnaev said that the brothers had discussed a follow-up attack on Times Square.

The officials cautioned that the idea was undeveloped. One senior official described the plan as “aspirational at most.”

If someone is out to hurt a LOT of people, that's the place.

If you're doing this for publicity you go where you'll get it. Plus, Times Square now has outlets of American icons like Disney and Olive Garden so you'll get a little more resonance from people in fly-over country and drive your point - whatever it is - further home. Plus, it's easier to get away in an open area.

NYC being America's commercial heart - so figuratively, the very heart of American symbolism.

They used their last pressure cooker and pipe bombs throwing at police. They probably were on the way to some crowded spot.

Why would they have grabbed another car and loaded up explosives unless they were planning something like this?

They could have planned to kill the carjacking victim, dump his body, and assume that they could use the car before it was tied to them. The pressure cooker bombs were remote control bombs - maybe they hoped to use it as a car bomb in some crowded location. For yucks.

I don't think the American public has realized just how big a favor that carjacking victim has done all of us. Of course he saved his own life in doing so, but still, we owe him big time.

It's very, very possible that if he had not escaped and put out the alert that the bombing brothers would have scored another hit. They had most the night to get to another good location for an "event", and early morning commuter crowds would have been a "target-rich" environment.

I am so disgusted by the defenders of the surviving Tsarnaev. He's a nasty example of what a human being can do to degrade himself.

Not to mention the people who thought closing down Boston was going overboard and the voluntary stay inside was a trial of martial law. It was a few hours of helping LE to do their jobs. Nothing more, and once they had them back to business as usual.

They had them trapped. If they lost them, who knows how far they would have gotten with the rest of their weapons.
