Israel says it shoots down Hezbollah drone

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military says it has shot down an unmanned aircraft sent by the Hezbollah group into Israeli skies.

Military officials said the aircraft was downed Thursday off the Israeli coast in Israeli airspace near the northern city of Haifa.

It is the second known instance in which the Lebanese militant group, a bitter Israeli enemy, has sent a drone into Israeli airspace. Last October, the Israeli air force shot down an unmanned aircraft in a similar incident.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in 2006 that ended in a stalemate.

Simultaneously, drama unfolded in the skies of northern Israel, as an Air Force helicopter carrying Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on a visit to a Druse village in the western Galillee was forced to land after pilots were informed of the drone.

The hostile craft flew southwards along the Lebanese coastline when it came under the observation of the IAF.

As it flew around eight kilometers off the coast of Haifa, IAF Chief Maj.-Gen. Amir Eshel gave the order to destroy the drone, and an F-16 dispatched a missile, blowing up its target at an altitude of six thousand feet, IDF spokesman Brig.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai said.

It was not immediately clear whether the drone was armed or not. The IDF was searching for the remains of the drone in the Mediterranean.

6. Israeli planes violate Lebanon's airspace

Command Guidance Directorate issued the following communiqué:" On Thursday 25/4/2013 at 10:15 a.m., eight Israeli war planes violated Lebanese air-space from above Kfarkilla village, executed circular flight over various Lebanese regions; and then left at 12:10 p.m. from above Nakoura village.

And at 12:00 noon, three Israeli drones violated Lebanese air-space and executed circular flight over Shouf, South, Western Bekaa, Riyak, Baalbeck and Hermel regions; and then left at 1:35 p.m. towards the occupied territories."
