G.W. BUSH WANTS BROTHER JEB TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT
Apr. 24 7:28 PM EDT
WASHINGTON (AP) Former President George W. Bush says he has advice for his brother and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush "Run."
For president, that is.
In an interview aired Wednesday with ABC News, the former president says his brother would be, in his words, a "marvelous candidate."
Whether Jeb Bush ultimately does run, his brother added, is a "very personal decision."
Bush and his wife, Laura, granted ABC the interview ahead of Thursday's opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University.

(22,000 posts)but I don't think it would be enough. When they run commercials or print any kind of literature they have to be explicit about who's running.

(9,688 posts)This's what I thought about Reagan too. He won twice and yet he was a laughing stock. And now he's pushed as a fricken saint! Promotion is all, facts be damned.
You have a country where polls say 86% support background checks for purchasing guns, a no brainer, and a vote was held 54-46 in favor, and the majority was fucked over. Totally. Hardly a ripple. You have a country that wanted substantive health care reform in line with modern democratic countries, which have *proven* that a single payer system which e.g. negotiates for the people vs. huge pharmaceutical conglomerates, works. And yet you got RomneyCare, repackaged as ObamaCare, and in no sense addressing either the problem or the solution that the overwhelming majority of the people desired.
So how you going to stop Jeb?

(22,000 posts)for him to have a chance. His brother's 8 years in office is still fresh in the minds of most Americans. Also if Jebby decides to run, I think he has one shot at it and that's it. If he loses, he'll pretty much be as done as a burnt steak. He is 60 now, he'd be 63 at the beginning of the primary in 2016. One possibility would be to take a gamble on who wins, say if it is a D and after 12 years people have started to forget about W.'s disaster and he runs in 2020. I'm not saying it will happen, but that it would be one option. The downside is he'd be pretty old by then.

(9,688 posts)W won a second term when his first 4 yrs were not just fresh in mind, but immediately in mind.
If someone thinks that it takes awhile for the totality of someone like GWB to sink in, so they understand what a disaster he was, I say in reply that very few people who voted for GWB twice are capable of that kind of slow-cooked understanding. Likewise for Reagan, twice.
These people aren't deep thinkers. Deep thinkers are capable of faster thinking than that, just because they've already done a great bit to think things through. Second time GWB voters aren't necessarily terrible people, but their political orientation is narrow, their understanding governed nearly 100% by US corporate media. Perhaps they're tired after work, setting down to eat their evening meal with their family, watching the tube. Perhaps opinionating about it. But not dedicating any time to it, like they would do for an exercise program or any other thing meant to develop them as a person.
The US had two terms of Reagan, one of George H. Bush, two terms of W.
These jokers, god help the US, set the direction of the country that Obama seems totally intent on following.
It's like there is no opposition. So what kind of groundwork does that lay for Obama's successor?

(22,000 posts)It also depends on who the nominee is on our side. If it someone who can generate a lot of enthusiasm I think that will cut into his chances. He still has to live with the Bush name tied around his neck.
I tend to think he won't run though. The Republican are going to nominate someone who is hard right and I don't think Jebby fits the American Taliban style of the party.
