Donald Trump's anti-windfarm ads banned over 'misleading' images
Source: The Guardian
An ad campaign run by Donald Trump's Scottish golf resort attacking plans for a windfarm has been banned on the grounds that it was misleading.
The US billionaire has threatened to take legal action against plans approved by Scottish ministers to build offshore turbines that he claims will ruin the view from his £750m golf resort in Menie, Aberdeenshire.
Trump International Golf Club Scotland (TIGS) ran ads in Dundee's Courier and Aberdeen's Press and Journal newspapers with the line "Is this the future for Scotland?".
The ad featured wind turbines overlooking a motorway with the caption "image taken in California" and the line "Tourism will suffer and the beauty of your country is in jeopardy!".

(1,245 posts)That's about 20 miles east of Livermore, near the 580/5 interchange. Famous site of the Stones concert where the Hells Angels did security and stabbed a dude to death in late 1969, which many point to as the official 'end' of the Peace and Love era of the 1960's

The huge wind farm is BY FAR the coolest thing to look at in at least a 10 mile radius from where it is. Its barren wasteland out there, and the wind farm like a magnificent monument arising from it.
And although it may still be 'open', I can't remember hearing of any significant races that have happened on that motorway for DECADES ... nowadays any major races in the bay happen at Sears Point Raceway (whatever it's called now ... infineon rw last I heard).

(9,965 posts)Weather, forces of the market, and killjoy neighbors did in Altamont. It always was a local track, never in the same league as Sears Point.
Altamont Speedway has died its thousandth death, and no one bothered to show up for the funeral.
It was too sun-baked by day for auto racers in their fireproofed suits, too wind-blasted by night for fans in their layered hoodies, and too noisy on weekends for a few lawyered-up neighbors.
With no proper sendoff, the half-mile track, perched on the back side of Altamont pass, shut down some time after the 2008 season ended in October. The last oval, asphalt track in the Bay Area is closed for the sixth time in its 43 years, and many think this could be the once and for all of it.
"It's the curse of Altamont," said former track promoter Kenny Shepherd. "I wouldn't call it a surprise. It's more a shame."

(1,245 posts)I was just pointing out the facts about it ... and I think it's hilarious that the Donald would try to use that racetrack as an example of a sports venue that was 'ruined' by the 'blight' of a windfarm ... when it's really such a 'small-time' venue it's ridiculous to use as an example.
Hell, like you posted, it's not even open anymore. And it's 'troubles' extend WAAAY far into the past, since LONG before there was any wind farm in the vicinity.
Oh, but on a side note ... auto racing is f*cking bullsh*t, in every possible regard. There's some actual snark for ya
And let also just say ... how nice would it be if advertisements (ESPECIALLY Political Ads) could actually be banned for being misleading in the USA? Kudos to Scotland for enforcing the rule that only actual TRUTH can be broadcast on their public airwaves?

(9,965 posts)To start with "Motorway" is a road in England. Equating a local short track with a megatrack like Sears Point is equating the auxiliary Little League field with Giants Stadium.
Oh - if motorsports is
auto racing is f*cking bullsh*t, in every possible regard, I've got a little homework for you, unless you're the usual steaming pantload of hypocrite:
1) Kick all the rearview mirrors off/out of your car. Ray Harroun used one to win the 1st Indy 500.
2) Jacknife all the seatbelts out of your car. Adapted from aircraft and popularized by John Fitch, noted racer in the '50's
3) Get rid of your modern, low profile tires - invented by pioneering racer Mickey Thompson
4) Replace your fuel injection with an updraft carburetor
5) Torch the side impact beams out of your doors - Popularized by Richard Petty, still called "Petty Bars" in the NASCAR gararge.
When you're done with that, call me. There's a lot more, and your bicycle does'nt get a pass, either.

(14,887 posts)claims puts tourism in jeopardy, looks to be out on Interstate 10 between Palm Springs and Indio.
Don't know anyone who has ever claimed that area is a tourist destination. Grease wood, sand, rocks and 100+ summer heat. The turbines are lovely out there. I always look forward to seeing them.

(101,161 posts)So the 'view' they will affect is just the horizon of the North Sea. If it was the view from some unspoilt wilderness, there might be some aesthetic reason to not have them; but it's not unspoilt - some wanker built a golf course on it. On a rare habitat.

Cronus Protagonist
(15,574 posts)His media campaign will be laughed at, he will be ridiculed and the windmills will go in. The cost of electric power in Scotland is high and we all want cheaper, safer, coal and oil free electricity. Trump wants a pretty golf course, and he's got one, with some cantankerous neighbors who will make sure his guests will know they're not welcome there.
Trumps concerns are trumped by ours.
