China says new bird flu case found in northeast

Source: Reuters

BEIJING (Reuters) - A man in the northeastern Chinese province of Shandong has been infected by a new strain of bird flu, the first case found in the province, state news agency Xinhua said on Monday, bringing the total number of victims in China to 105.

The H7N9 virus has killed 20 people in China. Although it is not clear how people are becoming infected, the World Health Organization (WHO) says there is no evidence of the most worrying scenario - sustained transmission between people.

A 36-year-old man from the city of Zaozhuang in Shandong was being treated in hospital, while two more people were infected in eastern Zhejiang province, Xinhua said.

A total of nine people in close contact with the victim in Shandong were under observation but were showing no signs of infection, Xinhua said.

I think this is the first case outside the areas in which it's already been found.

The big problem I've heard with this one is that the birds don't get sick Marrah_G Apr 2013 #1

It makes it very difficult to find flocks that are infected so the birds move around the country easily. People often buy the live or freshly killed birds and bring them home to butcher them.

Definitely a situation to keep an eye on. Ever since I read The Hot Zone this stuff has fascinated me.

But the viral strains tend to mutate, so that may or may not be feasible, i.e. it may have moved into the human population before then.

It appears to be pretty widely spread in the domestic fowl by now.
